Finding a laptop with a good LCD screen?!?

I bought the missus a fairly good Sony Vaio laptop for Xmas.

The Vaios have what they call an 'X-Black' screen.

Compared to my 6-year old Vaio laptop with the same 'X-Black' screen, the screens on the modern Vaios look very washed-out and have a much narrower viewing angle. The screen on my old laptop still beats anything I've seen recently.

I've noticed that Dells and Acers have the same poor quality LCD screen.

Is it just me or do all modern laptops have such poor quality LCD screens?

Xblack by Sony, Truelife by Dell is all just marketing rubbish. What ya got is a Gloss finish LCD.

Generally the same quality LCD's go into modern laptops.

    Laptop screens are pretty variable.

Dell, Acer, HP, Apple etc don't make screens, they just use off the shelf screens from LG, Samsung, AUO etc. Of course, there can be a pretty massive difference in overall quality. Sometimes, especially with build-to-order guys like Dell, they'll use different brands of screen in the same model of laptop (to ensure good stock supply) and its a crapshoot as to which you get.

I know when I ordered my Dell, if you picked 1440x900 CCFL, you could get either a LG (very good) or a Samsung (people described it as 'grainy'). Needless to say, if I had gotten the Samsung i'd have sent it back :pac:

Generally, apart from the variability, I would say laptop screens are better nowadays than 6 years ago. I mean, you've got WLED backlight on most models (and even RGBLED on higher-end ones). The flip side is that glossy has pretty much replaced matte, so if you have a preference for matte you are nearly out of options these days.

I specifically got the the Dell vostro 1220 because it has a matte screen. Really can't stand glossy.

    I wish.

As I said, the LCD screen in the Sony Vaio I paid €1,500 for over six years ago owns basically anything in the current Vaio range.

I just might break the habit of a lifetime and buy Toshiba.

I would be pretty surprised if that was the case. For sure screen tech hasn't come on in leaps and bounds, but I don't think it has gone backwards.

€1500 will buy you a laptop with RGBLED screen. Even Sony offer some models with that screen (not sure if Sony come in under €1500 but others certainly do). Have you seen one of those screens? I would be pretty surprised if your laptop from 03 or early 04 looks better.
