Hi, My wife wrote off the car this morning in the snow in Donegal. She's fine, cars totaled! What now? We're down to using the 10 year old Astra with the dodgy fuel pump and the not-very-good brakes. So, time for a new car. We've been looking about at the scrapage deals wondering if they're worth the 1st years depreciation. Or are they just a scam to get us to buy over-priced cars to support Bill Cullen and his well dressed, bling bling, ilk? What do you think?

If you have an old car, and want a new car, IMO there has never been a better time to buy, some great deals on offer. You pick up a new car for Panda for €7K, a Fiesta for €12K, Magane for €14.5K, a Polo diesel for €15K, etc.

Just to put this in to perspective, that brand new Panda would cost IR£5.5k in old money!

Worth it for me. I'm trading in my Ford Ka for a nice shiny new one that's a much better spec and is only costing me €8875 - less than I paid for the old one ten years ago . Mind you, I managed to get in before they ended their sale at the weekend, so I'm one of the lucky ones.

I'm just waiting for the dealer to tell me to come and get it .....happy days :D

I don't think depreciation really comes into it generally. If somebody is scrapping their 10 years or older car and buying a new one, it is very likely that they will keep the new one for a very long time, possibly until then next scrappage scheme making depreciation a low cost of ownership.

Scrappage scheme or not if you trade or sell a brand new car after only 12 months then you will loose your shirt in depreciation.

    Hi there

I concur with Bazz26 - and if you buy a new car you are usually guaranteed at least 3 years trouble free motoring (if you get it serviced as required). I called into Highland Motors (Renault) Letterkenny last night - they have a 'Scrappage weekend' promo on. As Bazz says you can buy a megane for 14,500 (or a Clio for 8,999). I have a 2000 1.4 petrol Megane RXi with 133,000 miles on the clock (its now my wife's car) which I bought in the last scrappage scheme in 2000 it cost me over 16000 IR Pounds!!!

One thing I did notice - all the cars I looked at were diesel whereas 10 years ago the sales guy told me I wasnt doing enough miles to justify buying one - how things change.

PS I drive a Diesel BMW now so I'm not a Renault freak but would advise you to call in to Highland Motors (or any other Dealers in the area for that matter) because if nothing else you will get put in for a draw for a new Megane.
