Looking to get a laptop in the next couple of days so I dont really want to shop online.

Do argos have a good after sale set up?? Anyone bought a laptop or computer off them before?

Bought an Asus netbook from them, but only because it was reduced. If their laptops aren't reduced, I would always assume that they can be bought cheaper elsewhere e.g. PC World/Harvey Norman?:eek:/Soundstore etc.

Would agree with ejmaztec about the price. Argos are usually more expensive for larger items unless it's in one of their sale leaflets!

I am no expert in the laptop/computer dept. (clueless in fact) so not sure if this is a really good buy or not but they have a Samgsung 15.6" R519 laptop in their new catalogue. It comes with free bag and mouse, 3 year AVG internet security and a free 3 yr warranty!!!

The warranty seems pretty good, and although I have never bought a laptop of them anything I have returned has been repaired or replaced with no problems.

I see that Amazon is selling these for 350 Sterling, but no mention of the bag/case etc. When you compare this with the €450 Argos price for no bag/case, the Argos price seems on the high side, even more so for the €499 Argos price which includes the bag/case.

If I wanted one of these, I'd be looking somewhere else instead of Argos, and I would presume that you'd still get the same "extras" as Argos.

OP did say that they didn't want to shop online and asked specifically about Argos.

First port of call for me would be Amazon because of their excellent customer service and the fact that you can see other customers reviews. After that I would say PC world[I was in there a couple of weeks ago and they had some genuinely good deals], and possibly Harvey Norman. The problem with buying computers or anything like that really is that if you don't know what your talking about the sales people will almost always try to rip you off or else they don't have a clue what they are talking about myself.

It depends on what you want it for and how much money you have to spend, if you look around you can get a great deal on computers.

How can you discuss the possible purchase of something from Argos, or any other retailer, without comparing prices from whatever source? You have to have some idea of the variation, or you'll be parting with a lot more money than you need to.

They do seem a little dearer on laptops,I probably wouldnt go for one there (and watch out the NC10 they sell/sold had a 'shorter life-in hours' battery)HOWEVER Argos have always seemed to me to be a shining example of customer focussed business (ironic considering their no frills/catalogue approach ) with friendly ,knowledgeable staff and a generally no quibble returns policy .Contrasts that with the nightmare that is Currys/Dixons/PC World !Ive also had issues with Peats recently and in the past with Elara ,but good ole Argos have NEVER let me down over the decades. The Liffey Valley branch is staffed by absolute gems -one and all!

Anyone know if Tesco or Dunnes sell laptops anymore. They used to from time to time but haven't seen them in any of the shops I've being into lately. If they still do how do they compare price wise. I wasn't in the market for a laptop any time that I did see them selling them but am now so hence would not have taken too much heed of the prices at the time.

Also what are yer views on Acer as it seems to me to be practically the only make being sold by many outlets at the moment. People that I've being talking to about them are either of the opinion that they are heaps of junk or great machines so I'm as wise as ever!

Acer are great laptops - they're the 2nd biggest manufacturer in the world, so they must be doing something right - I think they have an image problem here due to Tescos & Dunnes and the like selling them cheap a couple of years ago.
I would have no problem buying one from Argos at the right price - if something goes wrong due to a manufacturers defect, they have to look after you, however if you just can't work it properly, I wouldn't expect much in the way of tech support !!
