Audi A6 Automatic Gearbox Problem

I've always aspired to owning an A6 automatic (fully loaded).

My brother has a 2004 model. Recently, he's been having niggling problems with the automatic gearbox. Trouble finding reverse, gears slipping etc. Getting a warning light on the dash but only when the car is running hot. No warning light first thing in morning.

Here's the thing... he went to a local Audi "expert" and explained the symptoms. Without even seeing the car, the guy told him that he needed a reconditioned gearbox costing nearly €2k. He told him that this is a common fault with the A6!!!

I simply can't believe. My dream car is flawed???

First thing to do is renew the ATF and filter.

Is the gearbox the 6 speed multitronic one?

If so, its well documented that the main CVT system could be on its last legs

As a result of my car having to be convinced quite heavily to engage drive, I had my ATF and filter changed in my Legacy. After a day or two with no improvement, I'm astounded at how much better it is now. For all the world, it's perfect.

I hope there's nothing badly wrong with yours though.

Is PRND flashing on the dash? If so it's probably the gearbox ECU. Audi had terrible problems with the Multitronic autobox. The slightly better news is that there's a crowd in the UK who can replace the 'box ECU (for about E1000), which usually solves the problem. Many cars have had a few 'boxes replaced.

Frankly I'm surprised this hasn't been seen on the Motors forum before.

Thats cos in ireland, a "fully loaded" A6 is a wrecked, high mileage, unserviced, bottom of the range yoke with a full tank of diesel.

And it's "ready for NCT" :D

On topic anyway, do all automatics need their fluid and filters changed?

It's always a good idea, unless the box is completely sealed. The interval between changes is fairly long though - 50k miles plus.

    Hi,
I have a 03 18t multi tronic and the PRNDS flashes sometimes,it also will not select reverse sometimes and it also judders when taking off, again not often.
I must bring it to my local dealer but do people think it might be the ECU or the gear box itself.
    Any ideas of costs involved

Probably the ECU, but the dealer will replace the whole box for an extortionate amount. It'll be cheaper up north though.

OP, I hope you're watching this thread.

I have an a4 multitronic and the ecu had to be replaced on 50k due to the prnd flashing. They guy who fixed it said that the gearbox will have to be changed by 70k as it's a massive problem with that gearbox.

Repairing the ecu cost me 1k

Is there any issues with the 7 speed box?
