The growing threat of a stealth tax on the rubbish we throw away was exposed by startling figures yesterday.

More than 2.5million homes now have wheelie bins fitted with microchips to weigh their contents.

This is an increase of nearly two-thirds in just a year. The bins, which can be electronically identified and weighed, are designed for 'pay-as-you-throw' rubbish tax schemes.

They would have been better off putting tracking devices in them for when they are stolen.

I think the Daily Mail have actually now begun generating stories for real with this: http://www.qwghlm.co.uk/toys/dailymail/

I think Run_to_da_hills uses that for making threads.

Why put a chip in each bin when you can just have a scales on the truck?

The chip doesn't do the weighing. The chip is so it can be linked to an account. In a shadow charging situation, it can be used to determine who is throwing out the most rubbish, e.g. if house 59 always throws out 100kg of rubbish every week - are they dumping commercial rubbish from a residence. In an actual charging situation, the weight gets billed.

Some of the bin companies here use the same technology, our bins are microchipped.

We only pay for collection when we actually put out the bin, not weekly like before.

The key to spying is that people don't know that either you are doing it, or who is doing it.

This is NOT spying. Not by a long shot.

Is 'spy' text language for 'Spicy'?

This is old news and has been used for the last few years.

If the bin is stolen or the account holder is in arrears the tag will alert the system in the truck each time someone attempts to get it collected.

I could see a more sinister move with electronic tagging, eventually when RFID replaces the common bar code on consumer packaging, the authorities will be able to track what people have been consuming, detect if they are using the correct bin for waste / recycle etc and fine you on your account records. It would tale seconds to scan the complete contents of a bin unlike optical scanners or a visual inspection.

I wonder how many people read The Daily Mail
    a) in an effort to find something AH-thread-worthy
    b) as a result of reading an AH thread ?

    What if bin-owners just refuse?

The council owns the wheelie bin.

You could of course deliver your rubbish to the dump and pay the charges there.

A few years ago I worked for the company that installed and calibrated the pay by weight systems all over the country.
I worked on trucks from both county councils and a load of the private companies.

The VAST majority of wheelie bins in Ireland have a "Chip" in them.
It's an RFID tag under the lip of the wheelie bin.
Its used to record the weight of the bin against a constant.. Ie, your address.
You can see the circular housing if you have a look under the lip at the front.

    What's the issue?
Would you rather be charged for your neighbor's bins accidentally?
