Now the reduced rates have hit me...

I've realised how low they are.

Used to be on €204 a week which was grand, allowed me to pay rent, feed myself properly and have money left for anything else (transport, bills, out the odd time).

I missed my signing day though, and now I'm being put on €100 and looking at it..

    €100 week
    -€52 rent
    -€40 food

Even if the eight euro was enough to cover heating, ESB, UPC etc, I would be left with literally nothing in my pockets. That means pretty much zero social or recreational activities, no means of getting a bus or taxi should I need to get to a job interview, no money to buy a shirt, shoes or anything else a job might require.

If anyone else is in a similar position, can you give me any advice as to how you get by?

I don't understand how just because I'm under 25 I am expected to make do with this much.

You should be able to get rent allowance.
I cant believe they cut your benefit because you missed your signing on date.

I think that giving less money to younger unemployed is a disgrace. Pure discrimination. The government knew that the public would let them away with it though.

Only giving pensions to people over 65 is also discrimination. Discrimination is not necessarily a bad thing. Do you have any other argument for why it's a disgrace?

Discrimination is unfair if there's no justification for it. And there is no reason why one person is entitled to more benefits than another on the basis of age alone.

That may be so, but there are many examples of discrimination of benefits based on age at the other end of the spectrum. You don't seem to have a problem with that (nor do most people, myself included). Why is it fair to discriminate against people under 65 but not 25?

On the flip side you're entitled to pension, whereas if you're under 25 there is good chance you not get anything at all

I missed my signing on date so had to re-apply for JSA, making me a 'new claimant'.

Surely if you had valid reason for missing the day you wouldn't have had to reapply?!

Now Fionn, you are not being entirely truthful, I have been following your various sagas with Social Welfare, and there was absolutely no reason for you to miss your signing day. You were given advise by several posters to apply in advance for holiday leave, so that you would not miss your signing day. For reasons best known to yourself you choose to ignore this correct advise. It appears that SW were therefore unable to verify that you were at the most basic, actually living in the state and available and looking for work. So that is from my experience the reason that your claim had to be taken as new.

You are very unfortunate however, in that the government had reduced the rates payable to under 25's. But honestly, if you are looking for information, and you ask and are given advise you should at least check it out. Because the next time you post looking for advise on say, applying for a course or a job and you decide to do your own thing, well you could be losing out on a good opportunity for yourself. I hope things look up for you in the future.

    *Gets off high horse*

I get the impression that there is more to this story here. I doubt that you were kicked off for missing just the one signing.

Well I didn't miss two? I had to go back to London for a week as it was my 21st and had flights booked for me. Then what with the mad weather I was stuck down in Ennis for a while as my flights kept getting cancelled. When I got back I didn't get into the SW office for a while as I didn't feel like walking 40 mins through snow blizzards but there you go, it's cost me and now I can't even afford to "jobseek".

lol you don't exactly invite sympathy do you?

If the flights were booked, why didn't you use your holiday leave?

Well isn't a pity that you couldn't be bothered to sign on or explain your situation to SW. Seems like you should have made the effort after all.

Why are you so special that you cant afford to go to apply for jobs (You can clearly afford broadband and a computer)......if you are not looking for job why are you claiming job seekers allowance?

You deserve nothing more than being thrown on the reduced rate.
Ok due to various circumstances I haven't been around for most of January, including my signing day on the 5th. I haven't even been into the Post Office to collect payments (which I assume would have been stopped anyway).

I don't have a valid reason for this, or at least not one to disclose, and I don't expect to be entitled to any of these missed payments. I do however, need to get back on the JSA scheme ASAP. I imagine I will need to go back into the Welfare Office and queue for one of those 'current claims' booths? Will I need to make an appointment or should I just go in tomorrow and get a ticket...

I feel for you buddy, but in all fairness you should know that the social is getting very tough on people and are Just looking for a excuse to reduce peoples dole, i mean when you got back you should of went straight away to the welfare and im sure you would of been okay.
My advice to you would be try and get a cheaper place to rent, looking through daft there are rooms in Galway city out by salthill going for 60 per week.

My advice is to get looking for a job - living on 100 quid will be very difficult indeed.

    For that post?

OP, You're not a unique claim. Get crackin' and get back down to them. You're a repeat claim and should be entitled to the full amount. If they insist you're not entitled to the full amount, get some contact info for someone above them and email/write/whatever to that person.

After every FAS course I finish i go to welfare, but even though I signed off to do the course, I still sign back on as a repeat claim, and not a new/unique one. I don't see any reason why you should be any different.

I think you only are considered unique if you're off the dole for 12 months because you have found employment (ie; not a CE scheme or FAS course, an actual real job).

I'd definitely argue my case with themn anyway. It's bad enough getting €196, I'd fight tooth and nail if they brought me down to €100.

Take a look at the charter:
6 - There is Zero Tolerance for posters being critical of those on benefits either individual posters or benefit claimants as a group.
Breach of 6 = Ban for two weeks plus Infraction.

I wasn't bored thank you. He was a re-regged user previously banned from this forum and has now been site banned.
