It'll be a very foolish move if he releases before 4.0.

They will just write it into 4.0

    Bobby,
    He aint that stupid....

Personally I think the 4G iphone will be a different beast with improved security "hardware" .

People go on about will the 4G have Flash , better camera, Radio etc etc , thats fine but I reckon the big news (in the hack community at least) will be Apples response to jailbreaking and hacking with better hardware and more communication with Apples server via iTunes etc , for certain tasks , hence making it a completely different beast to jailbreak.
This will start off a whole new hacking Cat&Mouse game for 4G devices.

The jailbreaking community has never had it better , this aint gonna last .

Call me paranoid but thats my 00000.2c worth .

Fairplay to him. I'm surprised Apple haven't tried to hire him to get him to stop! :)

Anytime I have ever heard this about an "unhackable" piece of hardware, it has been hacked. Every single time.

I guarantee you the 4G will be jailbroken. No matter what Apple says. In fact, I'd bet money on it.

Where I did say "unhackable" or imply the 4G wont be hacked ?

OK : Should have read ..... "The jailbreaking community has never had it easier , this aint gonna last "

By changing " better" with "easier" I mean jailbreaking a device now is simple (eg) blackra1n .
With the 4G I feel we may be back to the good old days of a jailbreak method that takes an hour 'v' seconds.

Not unhackable just harder ! , which will be a deterrent in itself

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,268 ✭✭✭Elessar

    Ok!

Just to inform everybody that from further reading, this new jailbreak is for currently tethered devices only. It is not a jailbreak for 3.1.3. Geohot has said he will not jailbreak 3.1.3. That's not too clear from his blog post. Everyone in the comments is assuming it's for 3.1.3.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,117 ✭✭✭✭Leiva

    True ....

On its own is a hack on the new 359.3.2 bootrom .

The old exploit (24kpwn) which was patched on 359.3.2 bootrom was causing the single biggest headache for jb's , as a tethered jailbreak is a kinda pain in the ass, (luckily not for me )

In saying all that , its a big event for the community , even the Dev team got a little stumped when the 24pwn got patched .
Any new exploit that removes the need to tether your phone after a reboot is definitely a good thing.
So this bootrom exploit incorporated into a jailbreak process is the complete package.

Should he have shown his hand before the 4G was released , who knows ? but surely he is not that stupid . Egomaniac Yes , Stupid No .

Oh man. I'm so happy. I don't have a windows or mac computer (I run linux) so the iphone crashing or needing a reboot has been a major source of pain for me. This is great news.

Hmm... It's not impossible that they may release an unhackable device. Take the PS3 for example, it's almost four years old now and not one single exploit has been found despite people's best efforts. Even geohot made an attempt at it (And was quite arrogant about it too) and got nowhere with it.

Apple could well make a completely secure system this time around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

I heard that the PS3 had been broken. Was it all lies?

edit: I don't think they will create a completely secure system this time around. There's just too much software running on the iPhone for there not to be a stack overflow vulnerability *somewhere*.

edit 2: I should add, all this proprietary nonsense has pushed me over the line into the loving arms of google and their android. I mean, I love my iPhone, and I'm gonna have it for a long time, but next time I'll be getting something that doesn't need a jailbreak.

your wrong there in all your points, he has released an exploit to would be hackers and developers, balls in there court to do something with it

i dont think we'll be running backups anytime soon !

Chronic dev team have a working 3.1.3 jailbreak, it's just a question of when now.

When are these gonna be released. Its nearly a week since GeoHot's video was released. What was the point of teasing people with it?

Geo has updated his blog with keys. I have no idea what any of it means. But people are getting very excited about it.

Looks like it's a definite a jailbreak will be released for 3.1.3 this month:

    P0sixninja via twitter: @cafedelmarr don't sell it yet, I promise you'll see a 3.1.3 jailbreak this month

Dev team from their blog: · 1 hour ago

The iPad is JB - it will very likely be released when the 3G iPad is released later this month.
Comex found an exploit which he has shared with the Dev Team and Chronic. GeoHot also has ported BlackRa1n to the iPad. No one thinks it's a good idea to release before the 3G iPad is released but once it is then I believe the JB will be released. It will be backward compatible with 3.13 as well as 3.2 Nothing is 100% certain but with so many people all agreeing to hold off until the 3G is released my guess is that the JB will probably come out later this month.

Hurrah! A jailbreak but probably no unlock for 5.12.01 baseband until OS 4 is released. Might be a kick in the teeth for those of you with newer phones! :(

George Hotz hasn't revealed his hand really, he has shown us that it can be untethered but Apple can only guess how he did it and how to stop it. Anyway intelligence would dictate that he won't release it until after the release of OS 4 so that he can check if it works on it and so that Apple can't stop it the OS.

P.S. Can anyone exain to me what the codes are on the blog? people are very excited about it but I have no idea what it is.

Geohot has just posted a photo of a 3GS jailbroken on OS 4.0 (BETA)

So if we add this new 4.0 jailbreak to the new exploit found in the bootrom (untethered jailbreak ) ....we are looking at firmware 4.0 jailbroken for all devices , regardless or model or bootrom type :)

We probably wont see this until probably 48hrs before the new iPhone 4GHD is released ...similar to what happened when the 3GS got released .

Yeah, interested to know this too. What's the story? They're likely waiting for 4.0?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,117 ✭✭✭✭Leiva

My "assumption" is based on the last major phone and firmware release . (3GS /3.0

Leaks and vids about 3.0 been jailbroken came out weeks before the official release , yet we did not see the new exploit been release til 48hrs before the official release .
The devs don't want their exploit patched so the hold off til last minute.

    It looking good but :D

I hope it's sooner rather than later. My phone is due a crash some time soon. ;) I just checked and it's been turned on for 53 days straight. Tethered boot is actually very difficult for me to get because I've no windows machine or mac.

I bought a iphone on vodafone yesterday, thought I could unlock it straight away. I didn't realise that the firmware couldn't be unlocked yet. Hopefully this will get released soon. I am going to try to bring it back to vodafone and see will they refund me the money.

I take back my forecast of 12 weeks ...now more like 2 weeks for your phone type :)

So now we're forced to reconsider our release plans once again. As of today (I can't speak for tomorrow, for all I know everything could change again), both the original exploit I posted about earlier and the new “spirit” exploit are probably going to be held off for a little bit longer to avoid being patched by Apple. Also, today I mentioned on my twitter that I can almost guarantee an exploit for 3.1.3/3.2 (all devices, and all models!) before the end of the month.

Jailbreaking has nothing to do with phone networks, that's unlocking which is a whole other thing.

How can you hate something you don't understand anyway?
