I purchased a can of Petseal which was in date at an auto jumble on tainey road. I mixed it according to directions and sealed the inside of a vintage motorcycle tank with it. A year later I had the bike restored to concours with a brand new carb fitted to it and got the mag rewound. When it is started it will cut out within minutes. I stripped down the carb and to my horror saw the needle all gummed up, all the inside of the tank a total mess. :( Is there any solvent availible that would remove this cr**P from my tank? http://www.bikersdiscountstore.co.uk/acatalog/Petseal.html

Never heard of it. I read that link you posted though, and right at the bottom I saw this:

    "Petseal Solvent
If you need to remove Petseal for any reason, welding etc, then Petseal Solvent will remove any existing resin coating.

NEVER use Petseal Solvent in a fibreglass tank, it will disolve the whole tank!
Price: £22.95 (Including VAT at 17.5%)"

    :D

They sell you a product and then have the audacity to charge you to get rid of it when it dosn't work, that takes the biscuit  Im sure its ordinary acitone that they use, ie the same stuff used to break down fiberglass with.

I have just had the same headache myself, bought a beautifull Norton Commando Roadster a couple of years ago and found that it had had petseal put in the tank. It had started leaking again as the sealant had started to come away in big chunks:(. I did a search on the Net and found a company called Tank Care Products www.tankcareproducts.co.uk they have an online shop which was easy to use, but I wanted to make sure they were cosher before parting with the money. I phoned them and the guy was really helpfull, and gave me some advice on using the stuff.
I ordered some Petseal Remover and Some of their New Tank Sealant, which is a single part sealant which dries like a plastic coating.
The parcel arrived after about 3 days and I set about prepairing the tank. There were no instructions sheets in the box, but as there are instructions on the tins and on the website it was ok:). The Remover worked a treat, and as it says it turns the Petseal into easily removable flakes. After I had preasure washed the tank out with soapy water I left it to dry for a few days and the used the Sealant. Easy stuff to use, but really stinks:eek:! glad I bought the bigger tin as it takes a while to get an even coat. Drained out the excess, as you can re-use it for further coats. Left it for about 3 days in my garden shed and then fitted the tank and filled it, no more leaks:)!
Been in there for a year or so now and no problems!

Wouldn't touch Petseal again with a barge pole, destroyed a good carb and had my bike off the road for weeks.

I'm guessing that the old stuff doesn't like ethanol in modern petrol. Ordinary unleaded can have up to 5-10% in which doesn't do some fuel system parts any good.

That's my conclusion as to why Petseal melted away.

If sealing a tank, make sure that the sealer can withstand ethanol. (that the ****ers sneak into the mix)

    FBHVC link on fuel

Have a Google for "Petseal ethanol".

Using Petseal all the time, no problems at all, even after a few years. 1st time I've use it was 3 yrs ago, to be precise.

It seems to me, that there was something wrong with either the original mixture of the stuff or with the curing time/temperature or so...

POR15 is pretty good stuff too.

    iansroadster, nice plug for...yorself?

I also used the POR 15 from Frost. 3 years ago in my porus mk3 zodiac fuel tank.
Have had no problems.Be sure to use as instructed, Its a 3 part kit (as has been stated)...Flushing, priming... sealing. Works well:)

I saw a tank treated with petseal before, It wasn't great at all.
The POR15 stuff is ace. You need to follow the instructions carefully and it is very time consuming following the steps and then drying the tank out completely.

The end result is fantastic. I had a very badly rusted tank and after treating with this stuff it is like new and the paint sets as hard as a rock.

    Really good stuff.

PS Don't get it on your shoes or washing machine... it is still there 5 years later.

PPS I got the por15 kit from holden.co.uk they had much cheaper postage than frost.
