An Australian publisher has had to pulp and reprint a cook-book after one recipe listed "salt and freshly ground black people" instead of black pepper.

Penguin Group Australia had to reprint 7,000 copies of Pasta Bible last week, the Sydney Morning Herald has reported.

The reprint cost A$20,000 ($18,000; £12,000), but stock in bookshops will not be recalled as it is "extremely hard" to do so, Penguin said.

The recipe was for spelt tagliatelle with sardines and prosciutto.

"We're mortified that this has become an issue of any kind, and why anyone would be offended, we don't know," head of publishing Bob Sessions is quoted as saying by the Sydney newspaper.

Penguin said almost every one of the more than 150 recipes in the book listed salt and freshly ground black pepper, but a misprint occurred on just one page.

"When it comes to the proofreader, of course they should have picked it up, but proofreading a cook-book is an extremely difficult task. I find that quite forgivable," Mr Sessions said.

If anyone complains about the "silly mistake", they will be given the new version, Penguin said.

That's not so much a mistake as someones deliberate practical joke somewhere along the way. Proof reader should definitelt have picked up on it. :)

Indeed why. This PC gone mad thing is true. People should get over themselves and not give a sh1t about silly things like this. Move on....

P.S. No offense to anyone :D

I can't see the AH angle; is it Political Correctness Gone Mad or not far enough?

For safety's sake you'll have to slur some kind of ethnic group, just to be sure. I recommend the Australians.

    more news about nothing

would it even have made the news if it was "whtie pepper" to "white people"? - I think not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,255 ✭✭✭✭The_Minister

I fairness, it's obviously a mistake but someone had to type that on purpose at some point IMO.

Obviously the author thought it would be picked up.

Unless the word 'peoper' instead of 'pepper' was typed up, and spellcheck changed it to 'people'. :D

The proofreader should have spotted it though. I'd love to get a copy of that book now. :D

It's sloppy errors like this that mean the "KKK's 101 Best Cross Burning Recipes" will be outsold by Jamie Oliver once more...

This wouldn't be a big deal had it said white people I'm sure. Proof reader should have noticed before it went to print though. I wonder how many people will want to exchange their books

No surprise reading that, any Aussies I've known always seemed to have a little sprinkling of racism added.

Their favourite recipes would probably be covered in a Russian cook-book by Nora Titsoff.

Anyone offended by this book is just paranoid ffs.

The author also sells cooking utensils and even some salt & pepper shakers.

I suppose they are racist in someway too are they? ...

Maybe not, but It'd have been nice to see the proof-reader getting worldwide acclaim for catching the typo on 'white'.

The author was probably distracted by some "people" when plugging away at the keyboard at that particular moment. The proof reader is probably a racist cannibal who showed his true colours by not reporting it as a typo.

    These things do happen.

    People don't complain, peppers do.

I found the cook book "Natural Harvest" quite good, it was full of great sperm based dishes.
Semen is not only nutritious, but it also has a wonderful texture and amazing cooking properties. Like fine wine and cheeses, the taste of semen is complex and dynamic. Semen is inexpensive to produce and is commonly available in many, if not most, homes and restaurants. Despite all of these positive qualities, semen remains neglected as a food. This book hopes to change that. Once you overcome any initial hesitation, you will be surprised to learn how wonderful semen is in the kitchen. Semen is an exciting ingredient that can give every dish you make an interesting twist. If you are a passionate cook and are not afraid to experiment with new ingredients - you will love this cook book!

On saturday I had a nice barbeque and ate a kangaroo steak with garlic and herb sauce. delicious!
The Aussies are very resourceful with their food. they eat pretty much everything they can find in their surrounds, which may include the odd local every once in a while! :p

Seven thousand copies of a cookbook called the Pasta Bible have had to be destroyed because one of its recipes recommended adding "salt and freshly ground black people"

PC bullsh!t,books should have been sold with an error insert (leaflet) highlighting the printing error , rather than destroying them.
I would still think the same if it said add roughly chopped Irish people or whatever.

    What you lot think?
