Does anyone have any idea when the winners of the Francis mcmanus short story comp are announced? Simple thread really, I think it was early April last year so I was wondering if it will be so this year also.

I entered some years back and never heard a thing until one evening on the TV news they announced the winner at a function! I have my doubts about their judging procedure (maybe a little sour grapes on my part, I'll admit). The judges only get to read the final selection. There is a filtering process. Who actually reads the stories and decides which go through? I'd love the answer to that.
It reminds me of the 'who ha' when John Waters failed to get into the Eurovision some years ago. Afterwards, because he could, he created media waves about it. And whatd'ya know, hey presto, who gets into the final the following year...John Waters. He came last of course, but that's a different story. :o

I've heard nothing yet. I did talk to Seamus whatsisname recently and he said they had WAY more entries this year, so could take longer.

    RTE originally said April.
i left my envelope in on the last day (back in Oct), and there must have been 100 envelopes at reception, just for that day alone. Having said that, 6 months is a ridiculously long time to wait.

I'd kind of forgotten about this thread. Apparently, last year, the winners were announced on the 29th of April with the short list coming a few weeks earlier. I wonder if the recession is the reason for the surge in entries; methinks many a tale of woe will be read by the judges.

I got an e-mail from RTE. The shortlist will be announced on the 16th May next, and will be posted on their website.

Mountaintop, was the email to tell you that you have been shortlisted? (If so, congratulations)

Just wondering as it's common practise to let the shortlisted prizewinners know in advance - and I'd rather know in advance if I *hadn't* made it.

    Thanks and best wishes

A thousand apologies. No, a thousand million apologies. I said results would be announced on 16th May. WRONG. I read e-mail wrong, it's Wedsnesday 19th May: The shortlist will be announced on Wed. 19th May and it will appear on the website: http://www.rte.ie/radio1/francismacmanus/
I should have gone to specsavers!

    Hi mountaintop,

Thanks for the updated info. Do you mind my asking if the email was to inform you that you had been shortlisted?

(If so, congratulations. If you would rather not say, that's fine too.)

The reason I'm asking is that shortlisted authors are often contacted in advance of the list being published. I want to put myself out of my misery! :D

The e-mail was in reply to a query I e-mailed RTE. God, I haven't been informed I'm on the shortlist. I did enter the competition this year although I swore I'd never enter it again. I've entered twice in the past. The last story (2006 or thereabouts) I consider to be one of my best. I was peeved it didn't get anywhere. The story I wrote this time was more to do with something I was angry about. It helped to get it down on paper. When that was done I decided to pop it in an envelope and send it off. But I didn't write it with Francis Mac Manus in mind. So I won't be too upset if (as likely) I'm unsuccessful. Best of luck to yourself though...

Anger can be a powerful force, so I wouldn't give up hope :) best of luck to you and everyone else.

Well did anyone make the list ? http://www.rte.ie/radio1/francismacmanus/

I didn't, and I didn't make the PJ O'Connor shortlist either - shnazzle fazzle. At least I didn't spend ages doing the short story, but I put a good bit of effort into the 55 minute play.

Well I wasn't picked. Though I'd written a great story too.

    Oh well, always next year.
