Hi i was just doing some research in relation to servicing and maintenance of vehicles and was wondering if anyone could advise, I am trying to find out rough guidelines for the following questions:

In relation to servicing of Vans ( Ford Transits, Citreon Berlingos, Renault Vans etc...:

What the maximum Km travelled before you should service the vehicle ( if travelled with 12 months and before annual service is due )
What is the maximum km before tyres should be changed
What is the maximum km before timing belt should be changed
What is the maximum km before fan belt should be changed

In relation to servicing of Trucks ( Man Rigid trucks, Isuzu box lorries etc.... not 40 feet units but small commercial lorries )

What the maximum Km travelled before you should service the vehicle ( if travelled with 12 months and before annual service is due )
What is the maximum km before tyres should be changed
What is the maximum km before timing belt should be changed
What is the maximum km before fan belt should be changed

I know my questions are very vague and was just looking what people think the ranges are,

Thanks in advance for your time

    JB

    Hello JB,

    Welcome to the site...

First of all most people don't service according to kms as vehicles are now far more robust than years gone by.. Also in these hard pressed times a lot of people ignore the service intervals as specified by the manufacture that’s supplied with the vehicle the day of purchase and use the following guidelines wrt to servicing etc:

What is the maximum km before tyres should be changed - you'll see a silver “warning” bead of metal wire on the tyre indicating it needs to be replaced. This is a safety feature to warn the owner to replace with a remould just after the next payday.

What is the maximum km before timing belt should be changed - you'll hear a tap tap of a piston gently kissing a valve letting you know to pop in a new belt at your earliest convenience.

What is the maximum km before fan belt should be changed - again the thermometer on the dashboard will give you plenty of notice when a new belt needs to be popped in.

It's a similar case for large artics and semi's... the advantage of multi-axle trucks is they have spare tyres already installed in the trailer units; this help to cut down on tyre replacement dramatically.

I hope this helps with your research.. you've come to the right place.

    Cheers,
    CM

    Thanks for that

But would i not be right in saying that there would be aaproximate guidelines in the number of kilometres / miles that you can travel before you would need to get these issues checked at least

Point being the service interval for parts varies from vehicle to vehicle. Time, distance travelled and much more all play a part. A modern diesel for example needs an oil change every 20-30k klm, older ones only see 10k. Timing belts do up to 60k, timing chains rarely need replacing, tyres, wiper blades, fan belts, all have particular lives...You question is far too general and therefore, I’m afraid, impossible to answer.
