I'm a big bloke myself. not huge, like 6'3" 200 pounds. I get the bus a lot and flights at least once a year. but a while ago Ryanair found themselves in trouble when they charged a women for 2 seats because she was obese. Needless to say she won the case on a discrimination basis and was awarded a small fortune. No we've all been on flights where a huge S.O.B. sat beside us and the armrest has to stay up and/or they're sitting on at least half your seat and you. So if someone very big gets on a bus or plane should they not have to pay double since they take up another seat that could be used by another paying customer. Like they give kids under 2 free seats because they most likely be sitting on their mother/father laps for the duration and not taking up the seat.

So in my opinion when getting a bus or a train or on a flight they should have to pay for the extra seat they take up.

I KNOW PEOPLE ARE GOING TO GET ON ABOUT UNFAIR TREATMENT BUT THEY PAY MORE FOR LARGER SIZE CLOTHES ETC. ITS BLATENTLY OBVIOUS THAT THEY TAKE UP 2 SEATS AND SHOULD THEY NOT BE CONSIDERED TO BE COSTING A COMPANY MONEY BECAUSE THEY TAKE UP THE EXTRA ROOM.

I'm putting it out there to see what way people think or if a large number of people agree with me because of the way that peoples health are getting worse and worse in the developed world it might actually become an issue

If a person has health problems and cant do much about their weight they are people I fell sorry for.

Bu if person weighs 300 pounds and has bag at 15kg then why should person who weighs 150 pounds and has bag just 1kg over bag limit have pay extra to carry weight onto the plane.

Stupid and unfair imo

nothing worse that that dreadful sense of terror you feel when you see someone massive lumbering toward you, knowing if they sit beside you you'll only get half the small bit of room you are entitled too.

(although the relief when some other poor fecker is the actual victim is pretty nice).

Just install bigger seats. That way they have enough room without crowding people, and the slimmer people get loads more room!

Oh wait, that would probably mean cutting back on the six figure bonuses for the execs. Can't be having that.

Or just discriminate against a class of people, many of whom may simply be unable to control their weight due to emotional or hereditary reasons

The OP mentioned a discrimination cases.
If the person has a genuine issue (maybe like above) I suppose it can be medically certified and any airline surcharge wouldn't apply.

But realy, that's only a minor percentage of people who are obese

Yeah but in this country, everyone is related to someone who knows someone whos a doctor and can give you the cert.

It would also cut down on the number of seats they can fit in a plane, hence a higher fare for everyone...

No its everyone or no-one. Regardless of medical or emotional issues
they should still have to pay you're still taking 2 seats at the end of the day.

for bus's like Dublin bus... no.. bus eireann seat booking - yes

Why would an executive not be worth a six figure salary? Should they be on 30k?

I pay for a seat and I have room within the seat, there is no reason why someone should take that off me particularly if they are overweight.

Then again take that extra room off me. Ryanair would if they could.

If I pay for my seat, then there's no way that a fat person sitting beside me should be able to take up half my seat just because they were too busy eating 100 meals a day making themselves that fat.

It's ridiculous - especially on airplanes. If you are too fat, then either (a) lose the weight so you can fit into one seat or else (b) pay for the god damn extra ticket. Other people sitting beside you shouldn't have to suffer just because you can't keep your weight in line.

Sorry, don't mean to be harsh but this sort of thing really irritates me.

Indeed!

This thread seems to focus on the rights (or abuse) of large people, rather than rest of us? I workout daily, I'm tall and thin, and refuse to raise the arm rest. If someone overweight for any reason, medical or otherwise, cannot fit in the seat next to me without raising the arm rest (and overflowing into my seat), the airlines should either move them, or allow me to move, even if it costs them a business or first class seat to accommodate someone without additional charges for upgrade.

Indeed, but at least a part of the flow is barricaded. I've had words with an over weight passenger that insisted on raising the arm rest, which resulted in the flight attendant moving me to a vacant business class seat from economy.

That's the exact conversation I had with myself when I read the topic first (that's when there was no replies too!).
