Does anyone know what happens to ex garda horses when they retire? Are they available to be bought to the public or are they given to the gard that has been riding them?

I hope I don't end up with the chief that's been riding me.

Given the huge cost of maintaining an animal like a horse (feed, farriers, stabling, vets ,etc ) I can't imagine too many gardai would welcome the opportunity to own their old steed.
Contrary to the cruel suggestions here ( all joking I hope ) I cannot imagine the animals being sold to a Knackery either - very poor PR I would guess.
Hang in there OP - someone will know the correct answer ;)

Not to worry Deadwood - you could always use a couple of them to plough your field :D.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

They go to C&D (Petfoods) Horsey Holiday Camp for 2 weeks, all expenses paid, and then get a one-way tour off the factory.

They are retired to a wonderful place of sugar-lumps, oats and frequent gallops across freshly cut terrain.

The maturity level of the people that answered ( except the Mod) amazes me, it really does.

More seriously I think I heard somewhere that they live out their life in a field somewhere due to PR constraints, but I couldn't verify.
