Squealing noise when car is started

I am getting a squealing noise when the car (96 polo, 1.0L) is started. It goes away if you leave it for a minute and give it a small rev of the throttle. The alternator belt is also getting very hot when this squealing is happening. Any ideas?

    Belt is slipping, I guess...

The alternator belt needs tightening. When you start the car it draws a lot of power from the battery which the alternator tries to recharge. This causes a loose belt to slip and squeal.

Ok, the belt seems to be tight. Would slipping cause the belt to burn/smell?

    definitely loose belt.
may not smell or burn unless going on for prolonged period

If the belt is tight . could it be your Alternator is not turning? does the Red charge light go out immediately on starting?

If the alternator is ok, the belt is tight and it is still squealing, it could simply be a case of the belt being old and "glazed over" on the contact surface, so it doesn't grip properly anymore

if ur thinking of changinf it urself, it can a right pain in the arse on that shape polo if ya dont have the right tools, i changed one before and the tensioner on it is just a big spring, awful yoke to get on

The light goes out immediately when started.

I think a new belt is needed.

I'd say it's the Cat. Sleeping under the bonnet.

Too late folks. The belt gave up the ghost 30 mins ago. Luckily I was only 200m from home.

Off to the motor factors in the morning.

Check that the alternator pulley is free.
