    Hi Guys

Apologies for the dumb question but my background is not in accountancy.
I am starting my F paper exams in a few weeks and was wondering if there was a pre requisite for getting into a trainee accountant position?
Would I need to complete a fair chunk of my F papers before applying?
I have no exemptions so will be starting from scratch.

    Thanks a lot
    K

No, you can start from scratch!
Usually you will need to have some background in accounting... business course in college, a few exams, some previous work experience, etc. There are no shortage of applicants.

Make sure to check the minimum entry requirements for registering with the accounting body whose exams you want to sit.

Tenchi - cheers for the reply. I have registered with ACCA and have completed all the
necessaries so im good to go. I was unsure if you needed some exams under your belt before even being considered. Also I presume trainee wages are pretty poor at the moment. Any advice on figures to expect?

    Thanks

depends, where in the country are you?
I know someone in dundalk on €11.5k - he's an acca finalist with almost 2 year exp. He uses his car when he's out on audit but doesn't get mileage expenses. Is that poor enough for ya ;)

LOL funny u should mention it Im from Dundalk myself :)
Thats pretty awful to be honest, but its the state of the country I suppose.
Im just gonna crack on with the exams and see what happens after I get a few under my belt.

    cheers

Some of the accounting practices in dundalk can be horrible to work for.. and the money is ridiculous. There is no money in practice in Dundalk, even for qualified accountants.. and there never was, even during the boom. Be warned!

Having said that, if you are applying for jobs you should turn up randomly during the day with a cv and ask to speak to a partner in charge of recruiting, and if they're busy ask is there a time you can call back. They get literally hundreds of applications and most of them go straight in the bin so to have any chance at all you need to stand out from the crowd.

In 2005 the place I worked in advertised a junior office job. They got 100 applications, mainly from graduates - the salary was €15k and it wasn't even a trainee job.

They all have websites so find out a bit about the services they offer, management structure, etc, before applying ... flco.ie kmr.ie fdw.ie cmf.ie.

Thanks for the insight on the Dundalk situation. I was never interested in staying in Dundalk as far as work was concerned, and you have cemented that. I know a few guys who are in practice in Dundalk and the news wasnt good. Guess I will have to chance my arm elsewhere. Thanks for the websites.
