Boards redirecting to littlewoods.ie on mac

Has anyone ever come accross this problem before with an Imac?

Today when I opened firefox and hit my boards.ie bookmark I got redirected to the littlewoods.ie website. I then tried to manually type it in the address bar but still got re-directed. I then went into google and searched for boards.ie. Again I got re-directed. So finally I serched in google for specific boards threads. When I clicked on the link it opened a new firefox page but instead of having boards.ie in the address, it was replaced with littlewoods.ie and nothing opened (the rest of the address looked like a boards.ie address). When I tried to change it back by typing over littlewoods.ie with boards.ie I ended up back with the littlewoods.ie address (after pressing return).

I then tried to get on boards from safari but got the same bloody thing.

I'm able to access boards from a pc and an iphone.

    Very odd.

are the pc and iphone on the same network?

it's extremely unlikely that this is an issue with boards or even your ISP and more likely an issue with your iMac.

would it be possible that someone changed your HOSTS file, or your ISP screwed with their DNS servers.

The problem has now fixed itself and I can get onto boards.ie.

Yes the pc and mac are on the same network.

I have no idea what happened and am a little worried I may have been hacked?????

Would this be possible and should I be worried?

Or is this a known problem?

Do your PC and iPhone use the same DNS settings as your Mac? Had you visited the Littlewoods site prior to this problem?

I'm sceptical, but it's possible you have one of those DNS trojans that were circulating a while ago.

Try downloading ClamXav and running a scan.

I have no idea what DNS settings are Sad Prof.

They are both running off the same router if that's what you mean.

I got this reply on the help desk forum:-

I'm hoping it was just a temporary issue and was not a virus.

Do you know if macs have an internal scanning device for viruses as I clicked on that ClamXav site and they say you should have a backup of the device (which I dont) as the software may move files.

    Thanks for your help.

No. Viruses aren't an issue on the Mac which is why I'm sceptical that that's what you have.

Unless you experience further issues, it's probably nothing to worry about.

Off-topic, but you should always have a backup. Hard drives are unreliable and prone to failure. Get an external hdd and use Time Machine, it makes backup very easy.

Thanks for your help Sad Prof. Im going to invest in an external hard drive next week to back-up.
