Travel on the M50 or through town?

I hoping some of you guys have a bit of experience when it comes to travelling through dublin city center. Im currently working in IKEA and live in Tallaght. I use the m50 pretty much everyday which costs 4euro for the toll and then petrol money on top of that. Im driving a 1.6 ford focus.

I work a 16hour contract which currently is 4 hours per night over 4 days which to be honest i think is a joke. So basically im in 4 days a week and only doing 4 hours at a time. Also now im back in college which adds to my travel expenses.

It seems im averaging about 40euro per week on petrol, thats just going to and from work, with college in the picture id say id be looking at about 60euro per week. And my average bill from e-flow is about 65euro per month. So im in the region of 300 per month on travel and i dont know if there are ways to cut down this spending.

Naturally option number one is to cut out the m50 but how cost effective is this approach? Here are the two routes i would take, one on the m50 and one through the city center.

    M50: http://tinyurl.com/2w64x5t

    City Center: http://tinyurl.com/33qa9rw

Judging by google maps the travelling distance through the city center opposed to the m50 is shorter, not counting traffic. But for me traffic is a major factor, being on a 16 hour contract i usually work evenings. So my average shift would be say 18.00-22.00. Which is right in the peak congestion times when it comes to traffic. So for those of you who go through town on a daily basis, how much of a hassle is it? i dont know if id be flowing with traffic or away from traffic at this time or does it make a difference at all. My other concern is whether id see much of a saving going through town. Obviously the toll fee will be gone but would i use more petrol seeing as id be sitting in traffic quite a bit?

Any info or suggestions would be great.

Also i should note changing my car isnt out of the question, i would drop down to a lower litre engine if the savings were substantial enough
