Installing Linux on Dell 1150

A friend has an old Dell 1150 (Celeron 2.60GHz, 256MB, 30GB). Its running painfully slow so I suggested give Linux a try. Can anyone recommend a Linux variety to use?. It's main use will be his kids using it for browsing and MSN messenger. I tried installing Linux Mint 9 LXDE but it seem to hang while booting up(just after the four dots screen blanks). Would it best to format the hard drive first?. I never really used Linux myself bar messing about with backtrack so any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers.

You are really low on RAM in that machine which is probably the main reason why it was so slow in the first place. If you'd 1GB in it then you'd notice a big difference.

As for Linux, Ubuntu is normally as good as any distribution in terms of running on all sorts of hardware so it's odd that you're having bother with Mint. You could give Fedora a try. I'd still recommend upgrading the RAM though.

I thought as much on the ram front. But he doesnt want to spend anything on it as it just for the kids. I was hoping some version of linux would run on it. Might have a look see if there is any cheap ram on adverts .

Pity. Even a brand new 512MB part from Crucial would only cost about €25 delivered. That'd give you 768MB in total which would be okay.

I ended up putting a gig of memory into it. I install xubuntu using somehing called alternative install version. Problem is it hang at boot just after the logo any suggestion?

Edit looks like its a common problem with a workaround.
