Mary Harney just said on Prime Time that there is a 7% absenteeism in the HSE which is twice the national average. Whats the story here? Is this true?

Why would she lie about that? Surely she'd pick a more flattering number if she was going to lie? If anything she might be undercutting it a bit.

What she did'nt say was that it is most relevant among so-called frontline staff. I wonder why?

Even if it is true its a bit rich coming from someone who is part of a government that in the midst of the biggest crisis we have faced went missing for most of the summer

7% absent, 45% unnecessary, 10% overpaid and 38% overworked - just to complete the set.

Maybe being surrounded by sick people all day has something to do with it.

    http://www.examiner.ie/story/Ireland/idsnqlcwgb/rss2/
General support staff were absent most, and in hospitals in the north-east, including Our Lady of Lourdes in Drogheda and Monaghan General Hospital, rates peaked at more than 12%. This reflects an absence of two days a month each — double the HSE average.

Nursing staff across the health services were absent at a rate of 6.23%, showing they take less sick leave than their colleagues in portering, catering, community welfare and related grades, but more than medical, dental, management, administrative or health and social care professionals.

At the Central Remedial Clinic, which provides specialised services for children and adults with physical disabilities, support staff recorded sick rates of more than 16%.

Health and social care professionals were absent from a Cork-based service, which provides for children and adults with intellectual disability, at a rate of 13.6%.

i'd say a fair amount of those dickacting within the HSE are unlikely to ever see a patient in their lives.

edit: jebus, after reading that report again, it's a small fair amount!

She is a reminder of how f'd up this gov is.
A minister for health who doesn't believe in a public health service.
Its like a minister for justice who doesn't think there should be Gardai.

And you probably won't get one Ducky, but I appreciate your reliability. I'm off whenever the mood takes me, but thats just me, and I'd be a hypocrite to chastise the nurses. If I had to clean sh1tt7 bottoms every day, I'd think bad of going in every now and then as well.

Is it just me or would you not expect people who work around sick patients to be sick more often ?

actually, their acquired immunity should be pretty robust. mild exposure to some diseases can be like vaccines. obviously not in all cases like the norovirus and sars though!

if it was real yeah of course

I'll grip anything, as long as its not sh1tt7. Doctors signed up for the money and prestige(???never got that one), admin signed up cos its easy and no sweat, and nurses signed up because they like helping people - then they realised people are rank, but it was too late. This is all a distraction. The rate of absenteeism is not the real issue, its just thrown up to undermine the rank and file. The real issue is the abject waste inherent in the system - waste of talent, waste of money, waste of patients lives and wasters generally.

not really, I wouldn't expect people around crime all day to become criminals, most illnesses aren't contagious

then they realised people are rank -- they pay you , the general public are **** so why get into an industry to help them if you think they are stains?

Yet the highest rates of absenteeism are not among those with the most exposure to those illnesses or those with the most stressful job.

And some of the highest rates were among people working with people with physical and intellectual disabilities.

    ??
