VW Passat Engine Management Issue?

    Hi folks,

I have a problem with my 07 Passat diesel. About a week ago I noticed when I started it, it would start but not kick. The Engine Management Light came on but went off again. I would have to take the key out and try it a few times before the car actually started properly.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this and what the issue might be?

Your steering column is on the way out.It happened to my wifes 2006 one and is a'common fault' according to VW. It will get worse the longer it's left. You should get it scanned and this will identify the problem.

Steering column? Christ that sounds serious, and expensive.

I think it was around €360 ish and has to done by Main Dealer.Your best bet is to get it scanned first.

Fear not, if it is the steering lock issue, it's on a goodwill list. The feckers will charge you a fee to diagnose it though c€150

I know. Waiting on the main dealer to get back to me now. Steering lights came on when I tried to start it last night and it was beeping a lot. Once I removed the key and tried again it started. But its getting worse.

Just off the phone from the main dealer. Looks like its the Electronic Steering Control Lock and theres a chance it could let me down completely. Its going to cost in the region of €400 but they are going to check it VW will do this as a goodwill gesture. Im really hoping they do.

Car is in the garage now for a diagnostic test. Anyone know how much it costs to have this done?

They factored it into the price of the whole job on my wifes car. If you want to cure the problem it will have to be done in Main Dealer only.Scan on it's own is normally around €50.It depends on the garage.

Its with the main dealer here in Galway. They mentioned €400 but it may be covered under VW's goodwill. Im hoping it will be!!

You need to get it scanned firstly. That yellow coil light that flashes is the engine management light and could be a number of things.

Well got it scanned, even though i could guess/google the outcome of the results.....
Anyways the result for me was a new steering control mechanism....lucky for me my best mate is a vw commercial dealer and he fought hard, very hard with the vw people to get it sorted for me(and even then it had to go to a main all vehicle dealer).
The problem was "flagged" during a routine service last year and the fact that i have a full service record by vw meant that instead of  €1500.00 we ONLY had to pay €250.00  for labour as the part was supplied as a goodwill gesture by vw:rolleyes:.
I asked mrs moonshadow to enquire about the cost of a full service on the same vehicle and she was told it would be" €179.00 euro maam as it would take at least 4 hours",
Mrs moonshadow then enquired as to why the labour charge for the replacement "chip" today cost €250.00 when she was contacted at 3.00 pm as to whether to do it or not, and told to collect at 4.30 pm:confused::confused::confused:
    1 HOUR 30 MINS.....
Anyhow job done,BUT a big saving as a result of my mate, and NO more vw cars for us.....ever!

Just to update - After almost 5 weeks chasing the main dealer here in Galway I finally got them to take the car in today. They are currently fixing it and it will be ready this evening. No idea of cost yet but they are to contact VW for goodwill once its done. Ive also contacted VW complaining about the issue and the lack of response from their main dealer. Hoping they'll shell out some of the cost for the repair.
