The Philosophical Society in Trinity are staging a debate this Thursday night at 7.30 pm. The motion is that, "This House Believes That Man Has Dominion Over the Animals".

Dickie Power from the HAI is speaking in support of Hunting - please inform all hunting people, especially those who are studying at Trinity currently.

The Philosophical Society ( The Phil) is Trinity's oldest and most influential debating society having being formed in 1684 and the Royal Dublin Society owes its origin to the Phil.

James Redmond will be speaking for the motion together with Dickie Power. James is an angler and former mink farmer.
Opposing the motion will be Dr Roger Yates a well known animal rights activist and lecturer in UCD plus another.

The GMB (Graduates Memorial Building) is located in Front Square on the left hand side.

Everyone is welcome to Thursday's public debate, please come along, your support is required.

With modern technology etc. humans now indeed have dominion over nature - but its the misuse of this power I think is the real issue, not whether someone likes to wear leather, eat meat or hunt etc.

On duty in the range tomorrow night, so will have to miss this I'm afraid, but my own take on it would be that to assume hunters believe they hold dominion is incredibly flawed, anymore than that a lion holds dominion over, say, antelope. It's a spirit of coexistence.

Here here it wasn't me, I thinks it's a bit naive to assume people participating in field sports would automatically agree with that motion.

According to the book of Genesis, God gave man dominion over the animals but he was also bound to be their caretaker and not to abuse them.... if I remember my Cathechisim correctly :D

so let me get it right they are going to debate

    1. that man can do what they want to to animals....
    2. that man should be protecting fully animals

Whatever happened to the middle ground.

Protect, nurture, treat with respect in all stages of live then eat.:D
