The more I read the more confusing it gets:( anyone know which colour/brand I should use. I'll be draining it first. Bear in mind its a 10yrs old car but only 54k mls on clock. They seem to vary a hell of a lot in price.

There is no brand suggested in the handbook.

Just use the light red stuff, make sure you mix it with water.
1 litre water + 1 litre antifreeze = 2 litres of coolant. It could take about 6 - 7 litres to fill it.

Is there some reason why it is light-red coolant, is this Mazda specific?

All the cars I have ever seen that do not have branded coolant have been using blue coolant, not red.
