    Hi,

My 12 year old son want to learn guitar and with his birthday next week I was going to buy him one. The problem is he is left handed & a cheap left handed guitar is hard to come by. I dropped into X Music last week & spoke to one of the guys there & he said I would be better off buying him a righthanded one as he is only learning & it would be easier for him in the future if he keeps on playing. Is this good advice??

I don't quite see how it would be easier for him further down the road. Once a lefty, always a lefty. If you cannot come across a left-handed guitar, you can re-string a guitar to play like a lefty (Hendrix did this). This can make it harder to play on the higher up frets on certain models though.. though this generally isn't an issue unless your son is mad into metal music.

I'd keep looking for a bit. You should be able to come across a cheapish left-hand SX or Squire strat like guitar that would be perfect for a beginner.

http://www.thomann.de/ie/fender_sq_lh_3sb.htm <== these guys do deliveries and are excellent to deal with. Might be a bit of a push getting it in time for the birthday though !

I think the guys reasoning was that because he has never played guitar before it wouldn't make a difference if he learned to play right handed.

I may be wrong in this, but I think your dominant hand naturally has better rhythm. E.g. the strikers that can only shoot with one foot, etc.

Granted, left-handed guitars ARE more expensive so if he does learn right-handed, he will save money down the line when he upgrades.

Left handed instruments are expensive and rare and I suspect a way for manufacturers to reap a premium of left handers.

Duane Allman, Ritchie Blackmore, Billy Corgan, Steve Cropper, Rik Emmett, Robert Fripp, Noel Gallagher, B.B. King, Mark Knopfler, Gary Moore, Steve Morse, Joe Perry, Paul Simon, Danny Gatton and Mike Bloomfield - all left handed guys who play right handed.

Your son should try learn right handed now and save himself a lot of headaches later.
