just out of the class rep council in wit, and we were told today that the "christmas day" event will not be held this year.

classes will go ahead as usual.

the dome will not be opening till late.

entry to night club's will be by w.i.t only.

templars hall and other largely student populated areas will have increased security in place, and no one other than residents will be allowed to enter.

sounds fair concidering what happened last year!

Good stuff. Give ye students more time to study for your spelling tests.

Seriously though, Conor has impressed me so far this year with how he's handled things.

There will of course be a band of students who will set up a facebook page to "save our Xmas day". You're nothing these days unless you have a facebook page behind ya.

So, when I'm going to visit my immobile Nanny, as I do every day of the week, will I have to jump through hoops when I can't prove that I'm a resident?

I take point 3 means that the local nightclubs will only allow in students who have WIT ID? What about people who aren't students? Be they visitors to the City, or simply locals who aren't in third-level education but around the age of students?

I don't mind the WIT taking measures to distance themselves from the inevitable (early closing of the Dome is to be expected) but it seems like overkill to me.

Yeah, a terrible infringement there. Its not like there are 362 other nights of the year they can go out on. Some people might have to go one night without a disco, the horror.

So you're okay with what is essentially a curfew for non-students? Or am I interpreting the original statement incorrectly?

most likely they are looking for groups of students from other towns coming down and looking for parties. so id say someone in your situation will be fine.

its a wednesday night, and its mostly a student night out.
if your a local then the bouncers would know you so you should be fine on that too.
visitors to the city, well... im not quite sure whats going to happen to them.

overkill? how about last year when 30 odd people were arrested, the a&e department was flodded with alcohol fueled idiots...
i dont think its overkill. and im sure the residents of waterford city will be happy with the measures taken.

Its not a curfew. If mid-week a nightclub says they are having a WIT-student only night they are perfectly entitled to. Just like any function.

There are plenty of other things they can do. Its not like they are all alcoholics.

I agree that the Templar's Hall move is a bit overkill, and would it not be somewhat illegal? Who's has granted the authority to the security firms to stop non-students from legitimately entering the estate?

Well, tough sh!t I suppose... Private businesses reserving the right of admission. Just take it as every nightclub being booked up for a private party and you're not invited to any of them :D

Most student nights in the UK, Only allow students enter the clubs with Student ID, but I cant see this happening in Waterford, only where the union have a deal with Harveys

No seurity will be able to stop you entering, as its not private property, although they will think they can. They cant prove you dont live there

Exactly, the SU can hardly stop someone from driving into Templars Hall?
I could understand it in Manor Village or Riverwalk, but surely not Templars?

Moving to the WIT Forum. Its not really a topic for Waterford City, its a student event..

    Topic Moved

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

But it has far-reaching consequences? Would definitely be of interest to non-students in Waterford anyway...

Are the union not foolin themselves a bit by thinkin that all the venues in town are gonna reserve their place for students only?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,467 ✭✭✭Musicman2000

The union upset a lot of venues this year, there is not a hope in hell thats going to happen, apart from Harveys

Oh have they? What sort of authority do they think they have to have waterford shut down for one night for the sake of the students. I dont think even harveys will stick to it, wat business is gonna turn down paying customers, also someone i know who works in harveys is pretty sure its all talk.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,824 ✭✭✭RoyalMarine

do you not think the police, medical staff, fire brigade and waterford residents dont agree with this idea?

the town was a wreck last year after it, and it would be the same this year if it goes ahead.

its about time it was ended.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 24,056 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sully

Wont make the slightest difference. Students will go out regardless of WITSUs support, people will travel also. They don't need permission to go out. Not every venue in town will be WIT Card only and probably its just all talk anyway - on the night, they may not even bother asking like normal.

Maybe with the Dome closed, Christmas Day wont be as bad. The early drinking seems to stir most of the trouble.

Have to agree with sully, It will make it even bigger and worse than last year, It was the same up here in Galway a few years ago, all hell broke loose, the more you say no to students, the more they will want to do it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭Old Perry

Their not saying no to students though, its WIT card in only, is this not basically sayin WIT students have the run of waterford city for the night while its off limits to everyone else.

Facebook is now blocked within the WIT network from 9am to 4pm. :)

Which is a bit OTT for those using their own laptops, to be fair. Its a bit like your mammy being in wit wagging the finger saying "Now now Jonny, don't be dosing on Facebook and do your work!".

Block on the PCs because people were using it and blocking genuine users. Blocking wireless, is effecting those who are not effecting others.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,456 ✭✭✭stick-dan

they have it blocked at a network wide level...haha jesus thats mad..it did need to be blocked on the pcs but not on peoples laptops

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

You can still access it through web apps.

Would it not have been a bandwidth issue? A few thousand students watching linked YouTube videos might have an effect on the network, no?

Doubt it, college would probably have plenty of room in that area. Plus, YouTube isn't blocked afaik. Just Facebook.

they've been trying to cancel this since I was in second year. It just becomes an unoffical one and students just spend the day drinking in their flats/houses instead. Officially canceling it will make little difference i'm afraid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,456 ✭✭✭stick-dan

sure doesn't the college have 10gb capability, bandwidth is defo not any sort of issue....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭Old Perry

With regards to facebook, its been blocked on laptops basically because they dont know how to block it only on the desktops.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,456 ✭✭✭stick-dan

unlikely, ip's given for wifi and wired are two completely different networks, with different ip ranges so they could easily choose which to block on..they aint thick like.its done for a reason.Facebook serves no purpose for waterford IT so they obviously see no reason to provide for it.

Neither does the majority of the internet, to be fair :p Its not school. It shouldn't be blocked on laptops, only PCs which are and should be used for WIT Course related purposes only.

Can access it through my iPhone app without any problems (and yes, it's connected through WiFi rather than 3G). Would assume other phones and devices with dedicated apps wouldn't have a problem either.

Interesting points from everyone with regards to blocking Facebook. I'm not sure if you are aware but it was an unanimous agreement with all class reps and the student union that was passed to have Facebook blocked.

During the class rep meeting it was asked would it be blocked on laptops and they said yes as it is all one network (or something to that affect) and that they couldnt block one and not the other.

Unanimious? Meaning every single person at the meeting agreed to Facebook being blocked? I'd pay to see that.

Fate has given me (or perhaps just a cunning lecturer) a presentation that day. Probably for the best although I was late starting last year too.

I'm glad it's blocked to be honest, it's too much of a distraction.... I just have my Reddit to keep me entertained during the day !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

...and now I'm rostered to work that evening. The thought of having to catch up after missing a morning of drinking was daunting enough so I think I'll have to be giving the whole spectacle a miss seeing as I'm guessing most of my friends will be getting to the stage where they want to go home and collapse in a heap when I'm just finishing work!

It's open all day, but they won't be serving drink.
I hear Masons are opening at 11am to take the crowd from the Dome!
