Maybe a new rescue "3 iron".
Maybe a new golf bag - note to self "don't stick your wedge through it in anger".

Maybe an iPad to watch all my golf instruction videos (ShawnClem).

An electric trolley - i'm getting old.
A new bag - my stand bag keeps falling off my current trolley.

    New 3 & 5 woods. That'll do.

Oh... Some kind of golfing ability would be good too but I aren't sure where I can buy that :)

Hoping to get a new set of irons from the wife, R9's or Burner 2's.

    New bag from the in-laws

New driver from my folks.... not sure which one i'll pick out..... R9 460, or the Burner SuperFast

Might try and convince my brother and sister to get me a titleist vokey wedge, or a new Ping iNG putter

Yep, you've really sold them to us. Who wouldn't want a pair of blood stained golf boats that will hurt your feet. :D

LOL- I bought them online so didnt' get to try them on. They're just a little bit too small and have only been worn twice. Would be a good value buy for someone who could try them on first to ensure they fit ok!

Not being a bah humbug or anything but this is a laugh.
What is wrong with all yer current drivers and irons?
The latest and greatest driver isn't going to give you that extra 20 yards that the manufacturers claim it will. And whatever one you buy will be replaced in another 6 months or whatever with the next latest and greatest.

The €300 that a driver would cost would be far better spent on lessons....
Practical I know but the lessons will probably improve your game. The new driver won't.

Anybody looking for lessons vouchers for xmas???

Fair point. It still baffles me that people will buy a club off a shelf without hitting it... but to think that some clearly are happy to take it a stage further and let someone else pick it for them is even more baffling. Yet they'll expect said clubs to improve their game.

    @ozymandias10 what rumour?

    @ronaldchokes i'm currently getting lessons

My current irons are fake callaways, i've tested out a few different clubs, titliest AP1 and the old burners, looking to try out the R9's and Burner 2's soon. I don't have a driver, but have tried out the R9 and like it a lot. I don't think anyone would buy me stuff without me recommending it. And i'd say thats the same of anyone on here getting equipment this year.

It still baffles you even though it's been going on for ages?

That's just the way it is and I reckon you're well aware of it.

Sure people buy houses off the plans and book holidays to places they've never been to. Strange examples but you get my drift.

It's these people that make you low handicappers look so good

I'm sure this thread is just a bit of fun. No need being told again to spend their money on lessons...you also don't know the current state of their clubs or how they perform with them

No i don't actually. Terrible examples.

Another odd thing to say. Sure, i probably wouldn't bother watching Messi on a Saturday night if it wasn't for watching pub football on a Sunday.

I'm actually not an advocate of lessons, but they would still make more sense than buying a club off a shelf because it looks nice and got a nice write up in a magazine.

As regards buying golf gear for christmas, i don't think there are many people nowadays who buy straight off the shelf. Most golf shops have custom fitting services with launch monitors which are usually (in my experience) fairly accurate.

Being custom fitted is all good and well for pros and v good amatuers who have a very repetitive swing - but it's not a whole lot of use for your average hacker who doesn't know where the ball is going from one swing to the next.
I would say there are plenty of people who still buy "off-the-shelf" (I'm one of them :D ) and I was also reading a WITB recently for Luke Donald - his irons were standard everything - lie, loft, stock stiff shaft etc - so while I'm sure it would benefit a lot of people, it's by no means an essential part of buying new gear.

Hmm new Irons for sure. Either Mizuno MP 53s or the JPX 800 or Ping G15 and a new bag with individual dividers as pulling clubs out and putting back in is wrecking my head.

All depends on the bobs and if I can trade in my old big berthas which have served me well over the last 13yrs.

Really got into the golf this year so new clubs for the new year seems to fit.

Going to get custom fit as well, it does'nt cost any extra and seems to be recommended by most.

I bought a Callaway FT9 second hand for 150 earlier and thats working just fine.

I have an odyssey putter, an MD Rescue, Wilson Staff 3 & 5 woods.

+1 for the most part, but I'd say if one got a series of lessons from a pro who has a launch monitor then I'd say after 4 or 5 lessons the pro would have a good idea what shafts etc were needed.

Fair enough, you don't want to get customer fitted, but its pretty idiotic for virtually all golfers to splash the cash without at least having tried out the club(s) first.

ok quick question for people. I currently play with a set of clubs that are about 10 years old and they are only a beginner set anyway so going to upgrade at christmas.

Only problem is a complete new set of clubs would be far too expensive so i am thinking of getting a New Driver, 3wood and at least 1 maybe 2 hybrids for christmas and then a new set of irons a few months after.

So what would people change first the driver and woods or the irons????

Don't agree. I've been using a set of Titleist cavity irons for the last ~6 years. Haven't hit my irons well at all this year (went out from a hcap of 9 to 11 since March) so decided to take myself down to a custom fitter a few weeks back to see if it was my swing or the irons. Within a dozen shots of hitting my 6-iron yer man was able to point out a couple of things. The shafts I was using were 125g in weight which meant I had to work harder at impact to generate enough power to hit the ball and also to square the club face through impact. A couple of minutes later and with a 75g shaft in hand I was smacking the ball long and straight for the most part.

Now the opportunity to identify these type of equipment shortfalls, irrespective of what hcap you play off, is invaluable IMO. I still have swing faults which I'm always going to have to battle but at least I know the equipment I'm using is giving me the best chance to address those faults, and not adding to them.

Custom fitting is the way to go ,no doubt about it.
I'd recommend that anybody on here pick up a copy of Tom Wishons book "Search for the perfect golf club" and have your eyes opened on the myths ,lies and bullcrap peddled by the big golf club manufacturers.
    http://www.amazon.com/Search-Perfect-Golf-Club-Wishon/dp/1587261855/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

    Some interesting tips
FACT: Most amateur golfers need a driver with AT LEAST 11 degrees of loft - and perhaps even 13 to 15 degrees.

FACT: The average driver length on the PGA tour is 44.5". Most "off the rack" drivers are 45" or even 46" and getting longer. If the pro's can't control a driver this long, can you? There is some eye-opening data regarding shorter length drivers that can provide much better control with no loss of distance.

FACT: If you don't have a very high swing speed and a very consistent swing, you have no business with a three or four iron. This book discusses some very interesting alternatives to long irons - explaining the pros and cons of each type of club.

Its a great read and well worth buying as a stocking filler;)

OK. I haven't read the book but I may do in the future. But as for the FACT that most amateurs need at least an 11 deg driver and maybe as much as a 15 degree one..........well that FACT is pure rubbish.
I'll bet that this Tom Wishon is an American writing about American golfers. An 11 - 13 degree loft driver is probably what you'd need in nice warm sunny calm America where the air is light and warm and the ball carries forever. Fair enough. But a 13 deg driver is no good for those of us who golf in Ireland where all we ever seem to get is wet windy weather. Go out to Galway Bay on a windy Sunday morning and see how you get on with your 13 degree driver. It won't be pretty.

You have misread what I said.
Most golfers need at least an 11 deg driver and some up to 15 degrees.
The average male golfer swings the club at 86mph with a slight upward angle of attack.
Launch monitor research shows that all golfers with a swing speed of 80 to 93mph or less with a slight upward angle of attack ,need at least a 13 degree loft on their driver to maximise their distance.
If your swing speed is between 100 and 110 mph with a downward angle of attack you should be looking at heads 10-11 degrees of loft and you should use lower lofts than that only if your swing speed exceeds 105mph and your angle of attack is level or slightly upward.
Also bear in mind that most drivers sold nowadays have a closed face (to offset slice )of at least 1-2 degrees so in effect a driver marked as being 10 degrees is actually 11-12 degrees.

Perhaps is it a FACT that the small subsection of people that were tested for this writer's book research would benefit from 11 degree drivers and up, but it's impossible to say it is a FACT that most of the amateur golfers in the world would also benefit from this - for many reasons, one of which was pointed out by Ronaldochokes. Similarly on the 3/4 iron "FACT". I have neither myself but have more often desired one to knock a shot under tree limbs or into a strong wind, than I have had the need to hit a high floater from 200 yards to a pin tucked behind a bunker (which my rescue clubs would be more suitable for). While there is undoubtedly merit in the points you state from this book, they are certainly not FACTs, more opinions of the writer.

The writer doesnt state his findings as fact ,that was something added by a reviewer of the book I quoted off Amazon. They are opinions ,not Facts ,scientifically based and explained in the book .
I'm sure most people have never heard of Tom Wishon but he is recognized by many in the golf equipment industry as perhaps the single, most knowledgeable and most experienced expert on the design and performance of golf clubs. During his career he has designed more original golf clubhead models than any other person in the 500 year history of the game.
    Interesting video here
