Any wonder that cable tv and 40 ft high booster ariels took off in the 70s? While its hard to believe it now RTE 2 was a quantum leap in quality, suddenly there was good stuff on most nights of the week, not much as the station had such restricted hours but it didn't matter at the time.

The early and mid 1990's were the golden age of television, before all this reality t.v crap.
Great shows like Matlock, Brisco county Junior, paradise, x files, perfect strangers etc etc

God you don't ask for much Jonjo:)

Those were the days when people were easily pleased. As long as "ye olde idiot lantern" lit up with moving pictures they were happy.

That's really interesting to see those schedules.

The Nuact (news in Irish), is given a pretty good prime time slot. I'd say that did people's heads in. What was RTE news programmes like in the 70s? I'd love to see RTE news on the night of the Dublin and Monaghan bombings.

We still have the blooming angelus, but that's for another thread!

the all blacks won this game 11-3. it was the first time ireland played new zealand in new zealand. it had been played a few days earlier. still, fair play to the rte of 1976 for showing an hour of highlights in prime time.

RTE in 2010 isn't really better than these old schedules, y'know!

I'm not saying everything was better in 1976, but in those listings ...

    No soaps
    No reality shows
    No talent shows

    Not a bad starting point.

I do remember nightly "shutdown" on RTE television (ie National Anthem played then no more programming) but did TV really start at 4pm, 5pm back then?

    It was Closedown.

Yes, on weekdays RTE (pre RTE 2) started around 5.00pm. Usually a childrens programme like Wanderly Wagon or The Brady Bunch.

When RTE 2 started, it gave people a choice but no earlier starts. It generally commenced broadcasting around 6.00pm with SWITCH ON. Then Coronation Street - think RTE 2 began with the colour episodes (post-1969). It was broadcast daily on RTE 2 and eventually caught up with ITV in the summer of 1983.

On Saturdays and Sundays RTE 1 started earlier, but RTE 2 didn't really start until 3.00pm or so - Apple's Way / The Virginian / Men From Shiloh.

I think I can vaguely remember RTE as recently as the late 80s opening early on a Sunday morning to show mass and the like, and then shutting down again for a few hours during the middle of the day before opening again later in the afternoon...did this regularly happen or am I imagining things?

In the 1980s I remember RTE 1 usually opening up around 8.30am with two or three educational type programmes - Woodwork / Design / Italian for beginners etc. Or a nature documentary like Animals Of The Sun. Then mass or "Service" [if it was the Protestants turn].

It did shut down again for a bit but I think that was early 1980s rather than late.
