DDT or Saorview and reception in D4

How would I know if I am receiving DTT and Saorview? I have a Sony MPEG2 and MPEG4 TV, with an amplified indoor aerial stuck into it?

I have RTE1/2. TV3, TnG, RTE news and RTE NL and the radio stations listed here, http://www.digitalradio.ie/station-list.php following an auto tune. However I am unsure if this is DTT or Saorview that I am picking up; or even if there is any difference between them.

Secondly, my reception is awful. Given that I am less than 200m away from RTE 1 shocked that I have no reception. Ok yes I know the reception comes from 3 Rock and not RTE itself. I’m in rented accommodation so can’t put an aerial on the roof or in the attic, so is there anything else that I can do to improve my reception? I just got a cheap 43dB tesco aerial – should I get a better quality one, will that improve it? I am based in Sandymount.

Also it seems that when I actually sit down to watch TV that the reception is worse than if the TV is just on and I am walking about the house but not actually sitting down. I assume that is interference from the aerial – how can I improve that? My chair is near the window and I have the aerial near the window too.

    Hi,

You are getting the DTT at the moment (RTE NL is one of those channels). We get our signal from a roof mounted aerial, i never did have much luck with those indoor aerials. I have no suggestions as to how you might improve your reception, sorry.

DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) in Ireland is branded as "Saorview".
Amplifying indoor aerials is fairly pointless. A cheaper one will probably be as good if not better.

If your accomodation is low down with buildings between you & the transmitter, reception will suffer. I'm not familiar with that particular aerial but try moving it around the room, maybe even attaching an extension lead to find the best possible spot for reception.

I get perfect reception in D4 on a bent piece of wire lying on the carpet at the back of my house on the far side from RTE and 3Rock. There is loads of signal, you are losing it through the amp+aerial.

Put in an extension lead and place the aerial away from the TV and near a window on the west/southwest of you house.

Use the TV to measure signal strength.

Great I'll try all these tips - thanks!

I used both a powered and an unpowered ariel (or ariael or whatever it's called) beside my telly in Booterstown and got perfect signal. I needed to rotate the ariel and align it a certain way but once that was done reception was perfect.
