Land Rover Discovery Virgin

    Hi Everyone

I am a complete 4x4 virgin, I have always loved the discovery II the 01 to 03 model. I am looking to buy one probably in the new year so I am doing a spot of research on what peoples experiences with them are and also have many people had many problems with them. I know some people have had gearbox problems and that its a costly job to do but otherwise the engine is strong especially the 2.5TD. I will mostly be using it for everyday use but where I live I do need an 4x4 vehicle that will do some pulling and get me across fields. Any information will be a great help.

Late facelifted Disco 2s are generally reliable and sought after in the UK.
The manual gearboxes are fine provided they've been filled with the right oil, it's early LT77s from the 80s that had mainshaft wear problems. Autoboxes are problem free.

Engine wise, the Td5 is capable of starship mileage with regular oil changes. Fuel pump and fuel pressure regulators tend to fail at 80 - 90,000 miles.
It's easy to get more power out of the engine too.

The ABS/ETC/SRS systems can play up lighting up the "three amigos" on the dash. Plenty of advice on fixes.

Loads of commercials around but from what I've seen, original Irish registered passenger ones are poverty spec without the rear air springs, better off with a UK one.

As with all Land Rovers, you either love them or hate them but the spares support and amount of friendly advice available is unbeatable. The electronics are nothing to be afraid of, plenty around with diagnostic tools and they're not expensive to buy anyway.

Other than Donedeal, they turn up regularly on the Ireland section of LRA http://www.landroveraddict.com/smf/index.php

Thanks guys for ur help, 101sean especially. A lot of people saying that the sunroofs leak the gearbox has problems and that the fuel injectors need a bit of tlc and what are the three amigos 101sean I have never heard of them, I am fairly mechanically minded would a lot of the fixes be DIY fixes and my mechanic is a good Land Rover mechanic fo the bigger jobs it was him that was telling me about the gearbox both manual and auto. He said he could replace 2 a year for different guys

You are better off without sunroofs but they're not such a problem in D2s. You get bad rot in the rear floors and wheelarches in earlier ones as the drain tubes block and the carpets get soaked. It's a maintenance issue that gets overlooked.

Gearboxes are generally pretty strong but do go ocaissionally, not that expensive or hard to change. My main box (R380 same as D2) had a layshaft bearing go at 80k but the PO had been topping the box up with EP90 instead of MTF94  Had an intermediate bearing go in a 3yo transfer box which is an easy fix but I took the opportunity to swap to a Disco box in my 110. Most owners never have any trouble.

The three amigos are the ABS, ETC and SRS warning lights on the dash and are a well known Disco 2 problem caused by the ABS system playing up. Usual cause is worn wheel bearing putting a sensor out of range. A mate of mine who was a LR demonstrator driver used to get them come up on brand new ones in severe off road conditions! It's well documented with fixes on various sites. Check they light up when you start and go out after a few secs, if they don't light, someones pulled the fuses to hide the problem

The fuel injectors on Td5s rarely go wrong, just as well, they are £250 each! Sometimes the injector seating seal will fail and leak diesel in to the sump, simple fix and regular oil level checks will spot it, again it's rare.

Early ones were prone to oil leaking in to the injector loom causing a misfire, replacing the injector loom (£40) fixes it. Poor performance and won't go over 3000rpm is a usually a failed or non-original MAF sensor.

    Thanks 101sean

You are full of so much information. If only i can bring u on test drives with me lol. I will keep a look out for the usual probs and wear and tear noises from the engine and gearbox get underneath and have a look. will the underside need to be schutz coated or maxoyled every few year. As regard DIY on some jobs just by lookin in the net a lot i can do myself

I'm just a sad Land Rover fanatic! :D

Most vehicles are better protected against corrossion these days but there's no harm in a bit of extra protection.

If you find one my way I'd be happy to look, there's others that would do the same if you ask on LRA.

There's plenty of "how to" articles spread across the internet and you can download the manuals as well.

Feel free to pm me if there's something specific you need to know.

Have had a 2001 td5 disco for the past 2.5 yrs and cannot think of anything else I would prefer to be in day in day out. Never let me down, but have had a few minor issues along the way, but I do a fair amount of mileage. I have an auto and as Sean1010 said, they do not give trouble. Worth looking for a good spec one, mine has all the toys, leather heated leccy seats, good sound system, climate, heated windscreen.

If you have any bit of a technical mind, I would recommend one. Had a couple of the earlier discos (300tdis) before and there is a big difference, the disco 2s are so much nicer.

Compared to a Defender of a similar age (to replace mine would set me back 8-10k) they are good value. I'd make enquiries of the Revenue though over how much they value it as you'll incur 33% VRT on an import I think, although at that age I don't think they load it for the trim level. I assume you know you'll be paying €948 road tax :(

Really shop around, you buy Land Rovers on condition, not age or mileage (but use that as a bargaining point).

I drove a 01 disco for the guts of 9 years and put 200k on it.
    Issues over the years...
Replaced rubber mounted crankshaft/fanbelt pulley at 80K,
    Corroded suspension pipes at 150K,
    New clutch disc at 150k
    2 fuel pumps 100K and 195K
    5 new injectors at 193K
New head, fuel pressure regulator valve, and other fuel bits and bobs at 195K,
over all I spent about €6-7K in repairs from 2002-10.
Got all my landrover stuff from britishparts.co.uk and duckworth LR. LR here were not very helpful ever.
I have had a huge amount of help from contributors to this forum and for them I was always thankful...
I miss my Disco II as regardless of their faults and failings they have the most comfortable driving position of all 4x4 bar none.

    Hi Kieran and welcome.

Paddy Buckley in Mallow is supposed to be good. Servicing them is simple enough.
