Ok so I'm stuck in the back end of Africa with just my laptop for company and I've just finished both TV series I brought with me... Arrested Dev and the absolutely brilliant The Wire. Which has left a huge void in my life.

I was looking for any recommendations for what to watch next. Preferably a series that has a good bit of watching in it, meaning it's gotta be a few years old. Drama preferably...

    Thanks!

if you want the quality comparable to the wire then it has to be Mad Men or Breaking Bad IMO

The Sopranos and The Shield. Loads of watching but I got through them in about a week and a half each, they're that good. :pac:

Ooops, forgot Breaking Bad, only about 30 episodes so far but bloody brilliant.

I enjoyed House and Prison Break.

6 and 4 seasons there respectively?

Sons of Anarchy... three series in. Set in a fictional Californian biker gang. Intrigue, violence, tattoos, family loyalties, gang wars (kind of the same thing, come to think of it), huge Harleys, etc. From the writers of the Shield.

Supernatural... six or seven series in. Two brothers hunt ghosts, demons and evil spirits across America.

Criminal Minds... six or seven series in. A team of FBI profilers track serial killers.

Also, the guy who produced The Wire is now doing Treme, if you weren't aware.

I'd also recommend avoiding Sons of Anarchy, starts well but goes quickly downhill in Season 2.

Wow busy forum! Thanks, some great ideas there - Mad Men is definitely one going on the download list! Might give breaking bad a try too. Gave 24 and prison break a chance for a season a few years back and lost interest, but thanks for the suggestions!

Son's of Anarchy sounds interesting too.

    Really, why?

Personally, I think all three seasons are consistently high quality, myself. I just watched the last episode of season three yesterday and was gobsmacked by it. ;)

Halfway through season 2 there was something about it I wasn't enjoying and stopped watching around episode 3 or 4 of season 3. If I get desperate I might watch it in a few years. :pac:

If you liked AD, then try Running Wilde.
Co-created by Michael Hurwitz (AD) and Will Arnett (Gob Bluth in AD).
David Cross (Tobias Fünke Analrapist in AD) makes a few appearances too.

if you liked Arrested Development, i think you would like Modern Family aswell..i know not that many episodes but i think its so funny!

definitely Mad Men..my opinion, the best thing on TV at the moment! True Blood, Dexter and Rescue Me are well up there as must watches i think!

OH! I just thought of a great one: It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia!

I tend to assume this of people who've watched AD, but you've already watched all of Curb your Enthusiasm right?

It's as funny as AD, but without being so self referential that it kills any chances of getting new viewers with each season.

    I'd add:
    Band Of Brothers
    Generation Kill
    The Pacific

Short seasons, but all definitely worth a watch, also, Flight of the Conchords is brilliant.

Basically if it starts with static and the letters HBO appear on screen it's worth watching.

AH... now Entourage is a show that I can just not get into. I find the characters really smug and obnoxious and while I know that's the way they are supposed to be, I think they are like that in real life too which kind of annoys me. Plus I just find it all boring tbh.
    Anyone with me on this?

I think I may have felt differently if Piven wasn't in it. He just puts me off whatever he is in.

I watch it all the time although I realise it has very little comedic merit. It's just one of those progammes where I keep fooling myself into thinking it's going to be good but it never really is.

I think that's my problem tbh.

I tried watching it when it started and I was very meh about it so I gave up after a while.

Then I hear everyone raving about it so much that I decided to give it another go. Now, with all the hype, I find it even worse than when I watched it when it first started!

    Six Feet Under.

Jericho - it only got one full season, then a 2nd season with just 7 episodes but it was wonderful. It's based in this small town in middle-of-nowhere America in the aftermath of nuclear attacks across the country.
