DSG gearbox in the snow?

Is anyone driving a car with the VW DSG gearbox in this snow spell?

If so, what's it like? I've been reading conflicting reports, some people are saying it's fantastic but others saying it's awful. With no snow/winter function, I imagine snowy/icy hills are difficult to get up?

I'm considering a VW Golf or Passat in the new year with the DSG.

Getting on fine with mine in this weather (in a golf gti). Bit limited in that you cant choose to start off in 2nd gear

Its not great in my Dads passat but Im putting it down to his crap tires.

Not being able to pull off in 2nd gear or not being able to manually select a gear cause the car is up to speed doesnt seem great but I have told him unless he gets new tires he cant expect any grip (or braking / cornering).

It's working fine in my 06 Passat with Vredestein Sportrac 3 tyres.. I've been up and down the N3, M3, M50 and Malahide Road every (work) day, and it's been very well behaved in the last few weeks

Not being able to manually select gears can be a pain in this weather, but I had the DSG software recently upgraded by VW Enniskillen to cure the "hesitation at 1400-1800 rpm" issue, so now it barely uses first at all anyway.

...pardon my french, but I bought a new DSG Golf Plus when they came out, in ...06?...I could manualy select gears on that: how come you can't on newer stuff - did they change it ??

Mine used to take off in 2nd .......I think.........

I found it a great gearbox. Now I'm driving a 'conventional' Tiptronic, and I find it very good in the snow. It starts in 2nd anyway, and it short-shifts which is good for low grip stuff. If I feel that's fast enough I 'Tip' over to manual, and it won't go past that. I find it easier to drive, as all I have to do is steer/brake....all that gear/clutch palaver confined to history.

Drove one a few years ago in icy Scotland, just used the manual mode.

I have been driving my mk v GTI a lot in this crap weather with the DSG box and to be fair it hasn't left me stranded or in trouble

Despite having Eagle F1 tyres on it ....it has behaved alright ... From every type of terrain so far just sticking it in D and using a bit of basic driving cop on its not a problem.

I have also managed to get my E36 323i Coupe around with minimal bother despite it not having any functional ABS or Traction Control ... 99% of the time it's the driver not the motor who is the problem

Sorry, I meant you can't "force" it to start in 2nd.. you can of course manually upshift/downshift - but only once you're moving.

The recent software upgrade definitely helps though.. I just get her rolling in first gear and can almost immediately shift into second where she "digs in" and gets traction.

99.9% of the time though, "D" is more than sufficent.

Would like an A6 next though (05-08 vintage). Any opinions on the auto boxes in those?
