Important to ascertain whether entire estates are cut off, or whether clusters of houses or individual dwellings.

If there are houses very close to you that have water, then it is possible to improvise a temporary solution while waiting for the thaw.

I believe the thaw itself is only temporary. It would be absolutely intolerable if water remained cut off until the next forecast freeze arrives.

Ah ours is gone a week now. It's not the end of the world really, a bit awkward for dishwashing alright but we've been showering in our family's places and brought a load of washing as well.

Hopefully the rain will help thaw underground pipes, would love to give the place a thorough clean.

It's a huge hassle for those with no car, can't even load up the boot with large bottles :(

Any one know where the tankers are close to Rahoon/Mincloon?

That's really sound of you :) our next door neighbour dropped in 2 big bottles tonight so we are grand for a few days. Just the general hassle I am moaning about, and the fact there's lots of folks maybe carless. But fair play, if we help each other we'll be grand. :)

Left a tap dripping a little, no problems as a result. Last few days, supplying neighbours with water because they have none.

houses in new estates(within the last 5 years) including my own the stopcock are only down about6-8 inches which is not enough as I had to pick through that amount of ice to get the stopcock.
there are companies out there that will make cosy for each type of valve in cork i think but there are probably more.
here is one i found and no i dont work for them!
    http://www.stopcockcosy.com/
    hope it helps.

ps it looks like some foam adapter to keep water from accumulating and freezing the stopcock

Anyone know of any water tankers in the Oranmore area. Parents live in Beech Grove and they have been out of water for days now. Everyone else in the estate seems to be in the same position.

Literacy levels in the council are of ongoing concern :(

    Galway County Council
Update on Boil Water Notices and Supply Disruptions
    Date & Time Of Update 12.30 p.m. 27th December 2010

"There remain a lot of consumers throughout the county without water due to frozen pipes and this is very unfortunate.
    "

The mains supply largely is still operating and most reservoirs as of this morning have good levels of water available. If you do have water and are not affected by the big freeze please conserve it carefully. Please also beware that as the thaw sets in there is an increased risk of leaks so find out where your stopcock is and know how to use it. There is usually one under your kitchen sink and one outside near where your connection meets the water main or at your water meter. Generally twist clockwise to close the stopcock and anti-clockwise to open it and don’t over tighten in either direction.
    Disruptions to Supply
    Tonabrucky/Barna/Forramoyle
Nighttime restrictions between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. will again apply for the present.
    Oranmore
Night time restrictions will apply along the Dublin and Maree Roads.
    An Spiddal
    Night time restrictions will apply
    Ballinasloe
Demand has surged along the Dublin Road and night time restrictions will apply
    Kilkerrin Moylough Scheme
Moylough/Ballinastack/Springlawn/Treasna areas. Water supply will be cut from 10.30 p.m. nightly until 7 a.m. to conserve water. This will continue for a number of nights

    "Water Supply Update: 27/12/2010
Galway City Council are working over the holiday period to address current difficulties with the water supply.
At present, we are prioritising a number of major bursts; including one on the east side of the city affecting the Ballybane area.
We will continue to prioritise these major bursts as they arise.

We would ask landlords to check any vacant properties for any bursts that may have occurred over the holiday period.

We are also advising householders that the ground has frozen to a depth of two feet. This may result in some frozen services to individual households.
We are asking householders to be vigilant for leaks as the thaw extends.

Galway City Council again asks people not to run taps in order to preserve the supply for the wider community. "

I'm in Highfield Park and our water pressure has been very low today. Only a very slow trickle going into the tank in the attic. Thank god it's not gone completely..

It will take a few more days to deal with the worst leaks and to pressure the system up with adequate water supplies. Lots of burst pipes everywhere.

how do you even know if you have a leak?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 25,234 Sponge Bob

Serious leak = the ceiling looks a tad soggy, best do something NOW!
Less serious, could be underground outside...water meter going round but no water being used in house.

If the meter is water static and all taps and washing machines are off then you do not have a leak.

The council lads will 'listen' for a leak if they are around your area checking for one and you ask them nicely.

One of my friends who is renting has had no water the last six days. Had a look in his attic yesterday and noticed there is insulation on the floor but none on the inside of the roof, no wonder the pipes were frozen. Small little heater warmed the place up and hey presto water started flowing into the tank. The mains kitchen tap also started at the same time, so am not sure how that works.
How do landlords get away with this? Would this be covered by a BER inspection?

Water pressure in Highfield Park is so low now that our attic tank isn't filling at all. We still have water coming in through the mains tap in the kitchen so at least that's something. But it's annoying that I can't grab a shower at the moment.

We have no mains water but water in the tank. Think we may be cut off from 9pm to 9am but have had no notice of it. Should homes be contacted if the water is cut off? Maybe we have bust pipes too? Is there any weather Ireland can, em, weather?

I have mains water but no water from the tank it seems. Only the leaking tao in the kitchen is working everything else is off, taps, showers and I'm assuming washing machine.

One of the apartments above me got really badly flooded, it was like Niagara falls out there last night.

Hmm, we have had water the past day, which was great, but was told by a neighbour (the rumour mill, but to be far, it's as reliable as anything from the council) that the water was going to be cut off again; as in we only got a decent service because of it being New Years etc..

Anyone got updates? Nothing on the website and the Council Twitter says it would update by today. They haven't.

I saw water bubbling up from the ground on University Road today and reported the leak to the City Council.
    Hi ,

I live in Highfield Park as well, at the top of a hill.. Our water pressure was really low a few days ago so no water was making it up into the tank in our attic. This meant we had nothing in the hot water tap, no water through the shower and none for the upstairs toilet. We did have water through the mains tap in the kitchen and in the downstairs toilet though.

Unfortunately, the pressure has been so low since Wednesday evening that we have had absolutely no water anywhere (not a single drop!). So annoying but we are managing. Hopefully the pressure will improve in the next day or two..

Ironic that we live in a house that was built to a good standard (in terms of being able to withstand cold weather) - our pipes outside are buried 5 ft underground. Also, our attic is well insulated except for directly undernearth the the water tank (if some heat can get to the tank it won't freeze; ours didn't during the cold spell and never has). We had no water problems during the worst of the cold weather, people in houses built to a poor standard did. We have had problems since the thaw - there isn't enough pressure to get to us because of leaks in the general water network and in badly built houses.

About 20-25% of city homes have no water this weekend but after the critteryscittery scare the council will not admit faults with the water in public.

If you are unhappy with the information the corpo provides....basically none....then make your views known to your local councillors this weekend if you still have no water.

Walked down along University Rd today and water is still bubbling up onto tue road. I guess they haven't had a chance to fix it, they're probably busy fixing other leaks.

We still have no water unfortunately..
