    Around 25mpg in old money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,730 ✭✭✭Padraig Mor

I've done about 15000 km in mine. Roughly equal back road / city / motorway driving. Getting about 26 mpg on average (actual figures, not computer; about 520-540 km per 58 litre fill). Best 28 mpg. 30+ should be easily achievable if mostly motorway. Let me know if you need any more info. That one is the top spec but missing optional adaptive radar cruise control and wood steering wheel. Still way more gadgets than any BMW though....

The wooden steering wheel is the one thing i would like, also a black interior. But the others i've looked at were '16 multi-spoke alloys and no boot spoiler. The 5 spoke '17 look much better.

Any faults you've noticed in yours?

Think the standard wheels were 17 and sport was 18?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,280 ✭✭✭✭Eric Cartman

it needs the wood wheel , aside from that, savage machines, are you intending to taxi plate it VB ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,730 ✭✭✭Padraig Mor

Executive (SE in UK) have 10 spoke 225/50/R17s as standard (I have this). Sport (SE-L in UK) have 5 spoke 235/40/R18 IIRC. I'm not a fan of the black interior - it comes (only) with a wood interior which is, quite frankly, red. Faults - slight leak from a shock fixed under (Lexus) warranty. Just passed NCT last week no problems. Notoriously bad on snow/ice though if that's an issue. Not sure what kind of warranty you'd get from that dealer though........

Looks like a good deal! If you're thinking of taxiing her in Dublin, I don't think you'll do more than 20MPG in her, VB...

That said, you do the servicing yourself and the car will cost you very little in maintenance even with big mileage. Do the sums :)

I think 20 mpg would be a pipe dream for dublin taxi work tbh! I'd be looking at the 450H hybrid for that....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,487 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The hybrid version might be worth a look at if you plan to use it as a taxi:

We sold a gs450h to a chauffeur, he had major hassles as it comes with a space saver wheel and its impossible to get a full size wheel in as the batteries take up so much space.

Think we stuck a full size in the boot for the nct

Also the tiny boot means it wouldn't make a great taxi, dunno if they even qualify as a taxi because of these reasons.

Is there usually such massive depreciation on Lexus ? Prices seem too good to be true.

It's a 3.0 litre petrol engined car in a country that has gone low tax diesel mad.

Having driven a 300 with the wooden wheel I'd disagree. Feels great actually and won't go grubby like leather.

Why did you stick a full size in for the NCT? If a car comes equipped with a space saver it is perfectly acceptable with the NCT crowd. Are all the BMW's that use Run Flats (no spare) going to fail NCT's? I think not. Plus, Hybrids are exempt from the size regulations for taxi's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,546 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

this was back when the gs450h first came out. It was a major headache back then, and we had to put a wheel from a new gs in for the day. perhaps they changed the law since 2007.
Didn't know about the size regulation exemption but it doesn't alter the fact that it still has a tiny boot which is too small for a taxi.

Do PSVs not require a full size spare ?

    Edit, no longer I see

Is a space saver spare wheel now OK for the suitability inspection?
Yes, the requirement is that whatever equipment the manufacturer supplied originally is required.

These seem to be excellent value.

Spent a bit of time in the back of one on a long motorway journey in the UK recently, and to be honest, wasn't impressed with the ride at all.

Perhaps that was the tyre setup on the car I was in, but I would have expected it to be much better.

not sure that car would be very servicable, even and oil and filter change may need specialist tools?

id say anything above that is specialist equipment territory.

100% very servicable for any remotely capable person, many modern Lexus cars actually have a drainable filter that makes the oil change procedure a very tidy job as you drain it off before removing it. Draining the oil from the sump is the same as any other normal car. Spark plugs, pads etc are all nothing out of the ordinary either.

I think you'd be mad to spend that on a car you intend to taxi in unless you reckon you'll get extra work out of it. As you know I only drive cheap ole yokes though :D

Surely when the GS450h first came out it would not need NCT for 4 years after that? Or maybe is it that one used as a taxi/limo needs and NCT straight away from new?

Why don't you go for this GS450h at half the price instead?

    I'm inclined to agree.

Its going to cost a fortune to run, and what some may see as great value I would see as an example of horrid depreciation, depreciation that you will also bare the brunt of.

In saying that, I have always liked the look of the GS.
Not to everybody's taste but so much more interesting than the droves of German box's on the roads.

Anyway it is specifically excluded in the link VB attached. It fails because of lack of luggage capacity.

CLock thing is weird given that they have a touch screen too. Tape is a bit old tech, I'm guessing the target American audience want a tape player. Nearly all Lexus cars have a tape deck as do top spec toyotas

The mark levinson sound system in those is the bizz

Re the boot: it's ****. The GS300 boot at 430 litres seems good on paper but the shape is a bit odd meaning it's difficult to actually USE the space. For instance, it will be impossible to place any larger buggy flat against the back of the boot, instead it needs to be laid diagonally. However, what's even worse is the boot opening itself - it's tiny! I recently needed to transport a 21" non-flatscreen TV and had to put it on the back seat as couldn't fit it through the boot door.

But that's not the worst part of the GS! Y'know the way petrol pumps 'click' off when the tank is nearly full? Well whatever Japanese gob****e designed the GS's tank system, he ballsed it up! It keeps clicking off when filling!

    2 litres in
    'click'
    another litre
    'click'
    few more litres
    'click'

Eventually you manage to adopt a half in, half turned configuration for the pump to get it to work properly!

Besides that though, it's a great car. You're welcome to have a good look at mine if you're around Cork. Re servicing: most of it seems pretty straight forward from what I can see, and pretty DIY-able.

I don't follow your logic. If he buys a 4 year old 80k car for 17k how is he bearing the brunt of the depreciation ?

My logic is in the resale/trade in value,

Yes its very cheap for the year and the mileage is good, there is no getting away from the fact that even though its a fine car it is still destined to lose money far faster than any of its German counterparts.

It makes sense as a keeper, but try trading it in in another 4 years and it will be worth an awful lot less.

The car's previous owners have already taken the hit on most of the depreciation on that car at this stage. In 4 years time it will be an 8 years old ex taxi with serious mileage racked up on it, so it will be worth sweet feck all whether it be a Lexus GS or a Skoda Octavia TDi. I know which one I'd rather be using as my place of work.

Anyway it's a mute point as the GS doesn't meet the new taxi regulations.

Most cars will be worth well less than half 4 years after buying them, whether they were brand new or 4 years old at the time :)

Nobody in their right mind will buy a €17k GS300 and intend to sell it within a few years. Worst case scenario and you'll keep it for 5 years and it's worth nought. Depreciation of a bit over €3k per year is very low, lower than someone buying a 2 year old sh1tbox and keeping it for 3 years...

Not many people in Ireland able to do the sums properly and long may it last :D
