What info are you looking for? Are you thinking of buying it? Doing a project on boats??

I have a boat very similar to that one. It's all about the engine really - how often it has been flushed/serviced. And try to get some kind of proof of year. I bought one thinking it was such and such a year, but it turned out to be older. As someone who bought a new engine around the year 2000, that one doesn't look from the era I was shopping in. I remember those boxy tops were a few years before, but I could be wrong.

A non internet friend has bought it, completely unsure of what he has so I'm trying to help out a little. Is the HIN in a standard place on boats & would this help identify it?

How do we know how much use the engine has had, is there a clock \ counter anywhere?

Best to bring it to a boat mechanic who can see if it has been used in salt water a lot and if it needs to be flushed. I haven't driven a boat in a while but when I last did there was no way of checking the milage!

Any idea how much he spent on it? If the engine is in good nick it'll be some little mover! Insurance will probably be a good bit though.

    Is insurance mandatory?

If you are berthing a boat in a marina you may need insurance

Who had it before him? Did they keep a log? what did they use it for? then one can establish engine wear.

It has not been used for 2 1/2 years, previous owner lost interest so it was sitting in the drive. Previous owner bought it 5 years ago. My friend is on the dole & is looking to make some money from selling this. His plan is to clean it up (cosmetic), respray the trailer, service the engine, then I'll sell online for him. Is hard to do without knowing much about either boats in general or this boat in particular so any help is appreciated.

    Just my two cents.
If your friend is new to this type of boat I would suggest doing a powerboat course and as this type of boat is used close to shore and moving at high speeds I would get it insured,if he hits a swimmer another boat or someone falls out at 50 mph he could be paying for it the rest of his life.
Things to check, do a compression on all cylinders as a guide there should be a 10% difference between any of the cylinders.
At the bottom of the gear box there is a large screw open it and have a look at the oil if it is milky and has a very bad smell the seals will have to be done.
With any engine I get before it goes back on the water the impeller has to be changed It's not a big job but this small cheep part can leave you dead in the water with a blown engine.
Check the trailer for any fracture cracks in the frame and also check the wheel bearings and grease up.
    Safe boating :D
It might be worth his while joining one of these sites

WE meet up on the water around Ireland and have a bit of fun we can also help in finding parts and info about his boat.

Would you not think it fairly risky to try and buy and sell for profit something he knows nothing about? He could have paid 10 times its worth for all we know.

I would have to agree with dory, if your friend knows nothing about boats and is on the dole he would be better off just giving it a good wash and sell it as seen, everything for boats and engines is not cheep and you will never get your money back. As you asked about insurance I thought he was going to use it for a bit and then sell it.
The engine looks to be a 1988 if you find the number I will confirm. It looks clean and has a stainless steel prop and if it is running well could be worth more than the boat about €800 to €1000
The trailer is galvanized and if it is painted it might look like you are trying to hide something.
It's a buyers market out there so nothing is worth what you think, stick it in the free ads and see who bites.:)
    Best of luck.

Thanks for all the feedback. Basically a close friend of his needed to get it off his drive, without giving the numbers his chance of losing money on this is next to zero. I assisted him on making the purchase as it is in my opinion clearly worth multiples of what he paid for it.
It will be here (my place) later today as he has nowhere to store it, I can get further details when it turns up.
Basically he is selling this for the max he can to get a usable return, then he wants to invest in something small & suitable for fishing.
I also know nothing about boats but I do know how to sell, first thing is to know your product, thats where I am now. I did envisage at some point we would have to take it on to the water to stamp it as 'fully working' to add value, as it stands now I can't be certain of that and I don't wish to hide behind 'buyer beware'.

Again, thanks for all the comments, I'll keep you updated with what we do.

As it has not been used for 2 1/2 years before you take it out for a spin do the impeller, they become brittle when not in use and can disintegrate without warning, even if it looks ok change it. It should be something like this.

You will need to get it out on the water and make sure she is runnig sweet! Any serious bidder will want to see her on the water, running, before buying!
Saying thats its "fully working" won't add any value, its kind of what people expect when buying a boat, they won't pay more for it!

OK, just took delivery. Had the local frame welder around to take a look at the trailer, he said it needs a new damper, axle & wheels (in my non technical speak) so he will sort this soon enough, not a major job.
The boat looks ffine, no cracks anywhere, just a cleanup job. Battery is dead so will replace that.
I'll then advertise it 'as is' to guage how much I should spend on the engine & the hope that someone sees it 'as is' and makes a decent offer. :D

I joined in with the owner of the boat as he has no cash for repairs etc.

    Sweet looking boat though.

Just to give you an idea of figures, I spent 1500 EUR on a very similar boat 8 years ago. So take 1500 minus whatever being 8 years older would make it. Granted you have a bigger engine there, but the engine I bought could be seen working in great condition.

Thanks, we have an excellent boat mechanic down the road who is going to pop up and take a look later, but that was the kind of number I was thinking.

What about the trailer? I assume spending €200 fixing it will be fair return on the sale price or should it just be scrapped at that?

You could try these, http://www.boatbuddy.net/ or soap and water.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,736 ✭✭✭ch750536

    allow me to rephrase:

What do I clean a boat with to ensure:
    1) I don't damage the boat
    2) It achieves the best results.

Is it just soap & water or is there a car wax equivalent?

    ta.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,353 Mod ✭✭✭✭fergal.b

Most car shampoos are ok as long as there is no detergent in it after washing
For waxing I use G3 products with a spray of water, any car shop will have wax used for fiberglass or if you can go to a marine shop they will have it .

    Wax on Wax off.:D

    Here's one I did earlier.

Just had a boat guy take a look at it, this is a very experienced guy who fixes & sells boats for a living. He wants us to clean boat & upholstery only, do no more. Reckons it will get €4,500.

    The highlights:
    • 175HP engine - will do 70mph
    • new stainless steel propellor ‘king of propellors’
    • needs impellor
    • ski bar
    • 100L tank
    • bradley hitch - snipe trailer -plated - tipping - needs some work
    • electric start - power, trim & tilt
    • 'She's a fine boat'

How much was it bought for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,736 ✭✭✭ch750536

Can't reveal that, sorry, is about to be advertised. Hopefully soon enough it will be replaced with a semi-decent fishing boat for us (although I'm sure you can catch a lot of fish @70mph).
