Am i nuts or is it there - il try and get a screen grab using my PVR -

9:25PM - still there - recording using the PVR -

Doesnt appear on any other DTT stations - yet

i noticed the sound went a bit nuts just before it appeared - i actually thought my indoor aerial was acting up but then paused(myself not the image) when i saw the logo appear

Did anyone else notice the sound going - assuming the logo is there and i am not loosing my mind! :(

Just appeared. Sound also dropped for 10 seconds when it appeared. Surely they are hardly testing at 9.30 on Saturday night!

Same here from Mullaghanish, appeared on the programme promos and adverts after the news on RTÉ 1.

    Edit: No sound problems.

That makes perfect sense - i wonder will any of the other channels have there resolution increased now - or perhaps when the temp channel is wound up in april - RTE1 would look a lot better with a higher bit rate and/or resolution increase.

Unrelated but just wanted to let Watty know im set up on techtir - pending approval!

Probably only temporary, a way of raising awareness of SaorView. You can tell a given receiver will receive RTÉ One OK from the logo presence, and you can also tell it will receive HD OK, as you will no longer be able to pass of RTÉ Two Temp as guaranteed RTÉ Two reception.

All of the encoding is done at Donnybrook. Every DTT site receives the exact same feed so what one person gets, everyone gets.

Once the Temp channel is removed it will be replaced by the RTÉjr / RTÉ Plus channel late April/May at which point the multiplex will be full.

See RTÉ's multiplex plan here (posted by Apogee).

I wondered about it when it was first unveiled, but can anyone hazard a guess as to what, if anything, the graphic in the Saorview logo is meant to represent?

To me the red tick suggests approval
c.f. the UK Digital Tick logo, which is separate from Freeview (does it pre-date Freeview?)

    digitaluklogo.png
    http://digitallogo.digitaluk.co.uk/company_intro.php
The Digital Tick scheme bizarrely identifies services that don't need a Digital TV at all. Like Sky and Virgin Media

The Saorview Logo is more akin to "freeview HD" logo in terms of what it certifies.

The three concentric arcs suggest radio signals.

If this were the case, surely The Dog Should have been put on RTE2, to verify a given receiver can actually handle the HD being broadcast by this channel at the moment?

Edit: On recollection....I suppose this is why the caption now appears on the temp channel.

    Now that you mention it!

Gone now, strange of them to put it on at that time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,411 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Its there now again. I thought it was a logo for a show initially - there was a random filler on as they'd pulled the movie due to the Greens announcement - but it ain't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,451 ✭✭✭✭watty

I see it's placed outside the 4:3 safe area.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭Apogee

It doesn't appear to be transparent either - It'll do wonders for plasma screens.

The channel DOG's are bad enough but there is absolutely no need for this.

I'm still not sure it's RTE I'm watching...

I'm writing to RTENL immediately to see if they could ENHANCE THIS ANNOUNCEMENT FURTHER TO MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE WE KNOW WHAT CHANNEL IT IS BY muting the sound on RTE altogether and just leave the picture with say a half screen flashing banner with the words Radio Téilifís Éireann on it and a voice over from Gay byrne saying "This is RTE" "This is RTE" Testing testing..
    One two...one two...

Oh and have all that in HD with Gay byrnes voice in dolby surround ?

Why have half measures like a 2nd dog?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Red Alert

There's no need for any on-screen ID's now given that the DVB EPG is pretty definite about what a given channel's name is.

I think it's a clever move. Probably be there randomly until switchover.

RTE can advertise that if you are watching RTE1 via aerial and cannot see the "red tick" on bottom left corner of your screen you need to upgrade to "SAORVIEW" or you will loose RTE1,2,tv3 and TG4 tv channels in 2012.

Or they could put a message on the analogue service advising that they will need to change over. There is no point in highlighting the change over to digital television on the DTT service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,451 ✭✭✭✭watty

    maybe it's for shops?

    I'll ask RTE tomorrow.

The only problem is that the analogue broadcasts are sometimes fed by satellite via Sky, and not from either the main distribution network or rebroadcast relay.

A better way would be to have an MHEG5 generated caption that would then time out after 10-30 seconds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 815 ✭✭✭mickeyboymel

Or could they not just add this graphic to the respective channels DOGs beside the RTE ONE or RTE TWO and make it smaller? They Could then just leave the channel ident there all the time including in ad breaks.

    Thats probably their thinking alright.
Trust this country to have to do something árseways.
With the current turmoil politically,it will be a while before theres a directive that shops must only sell mpeg4 compliant tv's.

It's a messy dog that clutters up the screen
RTE need to look at the BBC1hd dog
Thats the type of dog you want.

Its too big, it a design disaster, looks exactly like an ear. And its correct to say that it will burn Plasma and LCD screens, especially if it's there till 2012. I watch RTE1 95% of the time, it's extremely distracting, especially with the channel Digital On screen Graphic in the opposite corner. They should be integrated as suggested. Perhaps a mail campaign to RTENL is needed, or maybe this is their revenge for being forced into official existence last October. Its extremely unlikely that viewers who have done nothing to alter their TV signal reception in the last few years would think that they have digital reception when still watching analogue. Putting a DOG on analogue closer to the close down date would suffice. I thought it was some kind of Subtitle ID, and interestingly, there is a second audio channel lurking unused in the mux, it's labelled NAR, which I presume is short for "narrative", a running commentary of the image content to assist blind people to "watch" TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭simatoel

As a little footnote to my last post, when the 405 line service was being closed down (no ageist comments please) the 405 transmissions contained a small "405" logo in the corner, nothing on the 625 service, so the precedent is there. RTE equipment was all 625 by this stage, the conversion was done by having a small 405 camera pointed at a 625 monitor with a bit of transparent tape with the logo attached.

I thought it was an ear with a tick above it, and guessed it was something to do with subtitles for the hard of hearing so pressed the subtitle button and discovered that the subtitles on live events were perfectly in time, not like the old analogue teletext which have a delay.

Extremly annoying .Have already had two customers phone me up complaining. As if I can do anything about it........
Actually I can- I've started a petition, please sign it and/or email RTENL directly.

Thanks , but I don't think one extra 's' detracts too much from the content. ;)

Seems to be no facility to edit it. (as is right and proper with petitions).

These viewers might have thought it something that could be disabled in a setup menu on the receiver!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭rlogue

The 405 logo was electronically generated. Prior to that RTE used the letter x, also electronically generated.

405 isn't completely dead, I can still pick up RTE on channel 7 with the help of an aurora converter, DVBViewer and my wireless network.

I was watching RTE 1 at the time it changed, the picture went blank but there was sound and then picture came back on without logo. At that time rte 2 temp still had logo etc.

Would there be an issue if the logo looks like another company's logo?

Saw a similar logo a couple of days ago. Only difference is that the "tick" was missing and possibly a different colour as well ... Saw the other company's logo on the side of a van - can't remember what it was for ..
