    "An Open Letter To NYC"

    Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten
From the Battery to the top of Manhattan
    Asian, Middle-Eastern and Latin
Black, White, New York you make it happen

    Brownstones, water towers, trees, skyscrapers
Writers, prize fighters and Wall Street traders
We come together on the subway cars
    Diversity unified, whoever you are
We're doing fine on the One and Nine line
On the L we're doin' swell
On the number Ten bus we fight and fuss
'Cause we're thorough in the boroughs and that's a must
I remember when the Duece was all porno flicks
Running home after school to play PIX * 1
At lunch I'd go to Blimpies down on Montague Street
And hit the Fulton Street Mall for the sneakers on my feet
Dear New York I hope you're doing well
I know a lot's happen and you've been through hell
So, we give thanks for providing a home
Through your gates at Ellis Island we passed in droves

    Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten
From the Battery to the top of Manhattan
    Asian, Middle-Eastern and Latin
Black, White, New York you make it happen

    The L.I.E. the B.Q.E
Hippies at the band shell with the L.S.D.
    Get my BVD's from VIM
You know I'm reppin' Manhattan the best I can
Stopped off at Bleeker Bob's got thrown out
Sneakin' in at 4:00 am after going out
You didn't rob me in the park at Dianna Ross
But everybody started looting when the light went off
From the South South Bronx on out to Queens Bridge
From Hollis Queens right down to Bay Ridge
From Castle Hill to the Lower East Side
From 1010 WINS to Live At Five
Dear New York this is a love letter
To you and how you brought us together
We can't say enough about all you do
'Cause in the city were ourselves and electric too

    Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten
From the Battery to the top of Manhattan
    Asian, Middle-Eastern and Latin
Black, White, New York you make it happen

Shout out the South Bronx where my mom hails from
Right next to High Bridge across from Harlem
To the Grand Concourse where my mom and dad met
Before they moved on down to the Upper West
I see you're still strong after all that's gone on
Life long we dedicate this song
Just a little something to show some respect
To the city that blends and mends and tests
    Since 911 we're still livin'
And lovin' life we've been given
Ain't nothing gonna take that away from us
Were lookin' pretty and gritty 'cause in the city we trust
Dear New York I know a lot has changed
2 towers down but you're still in the game
Home to many rejecting know one
Accepting peoples of all places, wherever they're from

    Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten
From the Battery to the top of Manhattan
    Asian, Middle-Eastern and Latin
Black, White, New York you make it happen.

You don't seem to understand that different people have different tastes in music. Why start a thread about a group that had a few hits in the late 80's/early 90's, moaning about how they aren't good lyricists and how only fraternity jocks listen to them?

What does the fact that they're white/jewish have to do with anything? It seems to bother you.

How did you reach the conclusion that the only people that listen them are "white fraternity jocks"?

You let everyone know where you stand, doesn't sound like you want us to convince you. What are you hoping to gain from this discussion?

someone to actually tell me what it is that makes them so revered, obviously something you cant do.
you realize a forum is for more than just posting links/videos and news about game dont you,a bit of dialect outside of that beyond you?

i dont get you,are you saying two songs is in fact testament to an impressive back catalogue, and proof of skill behind the mic,or are you just being sarcastic because you havnt got the knowledge of rap music to engage in a conversation that stretches beyond the words "thats a great freestyle nugget".........??????

They're musically versatile, they've some fantastic tunes with great breaks, they don't conform to stereotypes, they're fun, they try new stuff - sometimes it works, others times it doesn't. I like their rapping style and it's obvious to me they love what they do. That's why I like the Beastie Boys.

im not doubting they love what they do,and in a genre that can find a niche and stick with it,they are refreshing in a way.
i just find their rhymes fairly basic,as i said the voice can be grating, the rhyme pattern kind of one dimensional.
i mean i could be wrong but off the top of my head the rhyme pattern has more or less been the same from day one, fight for the right sounds pretty much the same as the majority of their material, rhyme style wise?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,534 ✭✭✭SM01

It depends what you're looking for really - it's inherently subjective.

So, speaking from a personal point of view, if it's lyrically basic but still sounds good, then it is good to my big ears. Also the music they write is very diverse and that seems to compensate for what you refer to as one dimensional rhyming.

I could have posted 30 songs but that would be a waste of time, at least people can play those two rather than read your trolling nonsense. (btw I'm not even a Beasties fan boy)

I have no opinion on the Beastie Boys, in fact until this thread I had never heard/recall hearing a song by them.
I tend to like U2, The Stone Roses, Oasis, The Pogues, The Frames, and the odd tune here and there from numerous other bands. (including ones in the examples below)
I dont however go on here or other fora saying that:
FFS the foo fighters are "shyte" - why do people like them?
FFS Westlife are shyte - why do people like them?
FFS The beatles are shyte - why did people ever like them?

There are lots of reason people like different types of music, some that arent easily explained. Ultimately though they like them because they enjoy listening to their music - they get a "happy" feeling - and if someone likes "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and you dont, but wonder why they do then you have no understanding of your fellow humans.

Also, if everyone on here came on a asked the same question as you about ever band they didnt like, the forum would be swamped.

You'd be better asking a general question:
"Why do people like different music than me/why do people have different tastes in music?"
That's be an interesting and in depth conversation and wouldn't appear to be an attempt to wind up fans of any particular group - which to be honest is what I would think this thread is.

Well were do i begin regarding the beastie boys.
they have reinvented themselves as much as madonna has over the decades. they dont conform to what the latest fad is in hip hop. they no how to make fine hip hop beats.
after licence to ill back in 1986 people thought they were finished but no they returned in 89 to release the classic and most interesting hip hop album to date pauls boutique.

the beasties are true master of hip hop but you wont catch them with eminem or lil wayne etc. thats why they have longevity in this game and when ot sauce committe gets finally released this year the bombs will drop.

the boys know how to make music they play, they can use an 808 they are old skool with a nice twist to there music. there not gonna come out talking bout drive bys, guns, bling, bitches, etc that just doesnt suit white amaerican mcs.

there rhymes are fun but there music is intelligent.

    legends.

The beastie boys are imo over rated,i undrrstand some will disagree, but from what i can gather so far, some disagree but dont know why they disagree, which is what the purpose is.

Not really, its a waste of processing power on the board site.

Well that was the plan. Posting the videos made me feel like Hugh Jackman in Swordfish. I had three laptops open in front of me as I rode the information superhighway tracking down the thirty videos on Youtube in a desperate attempt at bringing down the boards server...

Anyway back to the op's query about the fecal nature of the Beastie Boys. I think he formed his opinion of them being only listened to by jock types based on the audience they attracted for their first album and never really bothered to listen to them afterwards. The thing is that these three middle class jewish fellahs were able to create hip hop on their own terms freed from the need for maschismo and misogony was a revelation back in the 90s. Their second album Paul's Boutique is a truly landmark album and an artistic accomplishment light years away from their debut. Through the next albums they mined a rich seam of hip hop, jazz, punk and funk blending and switching styles without ever sounding contrived. True revolutionaries and pioneers there from the beginning.

The fact is whatever argument I put forward to counter the notion that they are crap is likely to fall on deaf ears and they fact that the op still maintains they all sound the same means he hasn't looked at the videos I posted.

thats very true but it doesnt hurt having the discussion,as i said it beats talking about game and having to be extra nice to the extra sensitive guys who post their dfi videos.
as for tbb,i dont like their music,i appreciate you do,i also appreciate your point of view.
but personally im strictly a rap fan, maybe a little narrow minded i admit but i like what i like.
thing is i think tbb veer off too far away from hip hop,i think their more rock than hip hop, thats just a personal opinion, and part of the reason im not a fan.

Well that's probably the rub. Probably the fact that they were blurring genres is what gave them appeal to a lot of people but is probably the reason they turn you off. The actually started out in the hardcore scene of the very early eighties before getting into the nascent hip hop scene in New York and they've woven all these different elements into their music throughout their career. They hard rock sheen that Rick Rubin put on their debut is kind of questionable but it's something they never returned to. Soft rock is a bit of a push...

Beats wise I think they were pretty top notch and quite progressive. Do they produce it all themselves? I'm not that up on it.

Rapping wise I think they failed to really evolve much and I've gotten rather tired of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 532 ✭✭✭Mickolution

I think they've produced the last couple of albums themselves, certainly To The 5 Burroughs. First album was Rick Ruben, Pauls Boutique was Dust Brothers and the three inbetween were Mario C.

I can see why people (especially big rap fans) mightn't like them as they're very different to most other rap out there both in terms of what they rap about and their sound. I don't think they appeal to "fratboys" beyond the likes of Fight for Your Right, but the type of stuff they do is maybe more accessible to people who aren't really into rap music as they're not rapping about street life, which seems to be what puts a lot of people who are mainly into rock music off Hip-Hop, in my experience.

I would say Paul's Boutique is one of the most important hip-hop albums there's ever been. It revolutionised the idea of sampling and was released at a time when this was possible. The album couldn't be made today as sampling costs and legal issues would have blocked a lot of the beats. Whatever your opinion on them, you're entitled to it of course, but surely you can see the importance of what that album did?

IMO they're good. They might not have the most intelligent lyrics out there but not all hip hop has to be insightful and meaningful to be good. They're no wu-tang but they're by no means "shyt".
