This morning while going to work, a van was heading towards me and behind it was, lets say, an Alfa Romeo 156. I noticed that the regd plate was a recent import,,,high regd from Dublin. I then noticed all the blue lights flashing at the rear. It was pulling over the van in front. It got me thinking that if the recession is really this bad, then all our future patrol cars and unmarked cars will be 2nd hand family car imports from Ulster or Britain.....:)

It wasn't imported just the Garda putting a new plate on it for themselves. Could easily be a KY MH or other county . Give them a bit of credit for having genuine unmarked cars, there not all D reg Mondeos and Focus''s

Yes I believe that certain departments are known to have a selection of plates in the boot to stick on when needed.

The state will never buy used cars imo except in cases where they want something older for undercover work Its not really worth it. Given that they buy at large discount and also the vrt/vat isnt an issue, the new cars are reasonable and will have a reasonalbe life cycle. Used cars would be a false economy I feel.

From a funny story I heard about an occasion that didn't quite go to plan, that does seem to be the case...

so you are saying that they can stick any old number they like on their car like 89 KY on a 06 Mondeo? In this case, the car was an ST220 and it had a very high regd which gave me the impression that they are now sourcing 2ndhand cars as unmarked car. I thought every garda car or unmarked was purchased when new.....

They have accuired a lot of new vehicles through CAB as well so maybe thats what it was..

    CAB helps.

Story in Cork is that they acquired a 03 silver ST220 that was lying idle for a long time after being confiscated due to VRT not being paid after it was brought in from the UK.
Not sure if it was lying idle for a year or two but the Dept. gave the go ahead for it to be kitted out and used as a Traffic patrol car.
