Im thinking of getting the 'ol BMW ,but i dont know much about them besides they are RWD and if not looked after their engines break easily.
If you know which one is better and why , what are their petrol consumptions and any other relevant info please do share it with me, and also i would like to know how much a looked after beemer would cost im thinking myself around 1k-1.5k ? Thanks in advance :)

engines break easily? I've had three high mileage BMWs of that era. And all are still going strong. (you are looking at the e36)

I'd recommend a 318is. In mid-1996, the 318 got a 1.9 engine, and its the best engine for it as its 140bhp, and better economy and a little smoother.

Be very difficult to get a clean one for 1-1500. Most decent examples left are 2500 minimum. I have to say though, I''ve owned 14 cars, and the 318is has been my 2nd favourite. (1st favourite being my current 330ci, so we ccan't really compare).

Get a 318is, you wont regret it!

For that budget your unlikely to find a minter.

Unless they have been maintained regardless of cost throughout their life(not many have) there is a list of problems that a 316/318 of that era can have. Worn suspension bushes, the well documented cooling issues due to failing pipes/expansion bottles/head gaskets, timing chain and rocker covers leaking oil, inlet manifold issues etc etc

IMO if you really want one, spend extra and find a good one.
