hi everuone, I was wondering what you all thought was a realistic price for a starter car? I am looking for somthing in 99 - 00 and I was thinking since it was a starter car of setting a budget of 1200.. do you think I need to up my budget or would it do me?

I have earmarked maybe a nissan micra, fiat punto, or a polo..

    Opinions/advice please ;)

sounds like you already have it set.

personally i wouldn't spend more than 1500 on a starter car. you want something nice, safe and reliable but you don't want to spend a fortune on it because your first car is bound to get a few scuffs etc, the micra is a particularly good choice.

the plan you have is a gud 'un! :)

ye mate, i was told by a few friends to get a cheap lil run around, also it keeps the insuarnce company happy (young male driver:mad:), However i think i will have to up by budget as i have not seen any decent micras for anything less that 1400

Take a look at the Fiesta like below, 1.25 litre is a nice little engine and the Fiesta is a reliable car with low running costs. Last run of that model also came with lots of nice to have creature comforts such as cd player, air conditioning and alloy wheels:

I'm actually completely gone off those 1.25. They're not as reliable as they seem. A load of them are known for burning oil and as a result the engine blowing. Also if they are low on oil for some time, they will sound perfect but once topped up they'll start knocking.

For me, a perfect starter car would be the likes of a Micra or a Polo. So little comfort features that not a whole lot can ever go wrong. Also if you're not bother by year or body work, you should be able to pick up a facelift Micra for under a grand.

    99 Fiat Punto €700 - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1957767
    00 Mazda 323 €790 - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1932976
    00 Citroen Saxo €700 - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1968486
    00 Mitsubishi Lancer €800 - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1968430
    00 Ford Fiesta €900 - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1968365
    00 Peugeot 106 €800 - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1968018

All the above have at least 1 year NCT and up to date tax. Can't see how you're struggling to find a decent cheap wee banger.
