    Hi All,

Just wondering is there any way around the 6mth rule before applying for full licence? For a personal reason & berevement in the family I need to be of help to a family member which will involve having to drive her around but due to the hours my DH works 9times out of 10 he wouldnt be around to be my accompanied driver.. My driving instructor has said if it wasnt for the 6mth rule I would be ready for the full test in a couple of wks so very very frustrating..

Sorry to hear of your troubles but there's no exemption to the 6 month rule unfortunately.

Can't do anything about it sadly OP. That 6month rule is actually an absolute joke which makes no sense at all :(

I don't think it is relevant here. The only exemption is if you have held a driving licence from another country. Laws are enforced by the Gardai. They can choose to prosecute or not. Boards users don't usually have that power. Get your application in for the test you can apply before the 6 months. The waiting lists are beteen 8 and 15 weeks at the moment.

how would that work, say I have 3 months left to wait and im applying in Naas, what if I apply with 2 moths left and get a date before the 6 months?

I'd assume you can just cancel it and they'll issue you another test in 6-8 weeks. My friend did his test the day the 6 month restriction was up.

Conveniently Naas has a 15 week waiting list. So apply now. Faith is basicly right to say if you get a date too early just postpone. But you can also specify in applying that you want your test after the specific date.

Not so bad then I suppose. I was pretty sure you could only apply after the date on the learners permit, and then waithing another 2-3 months!

Apply and state the dates you are not available to take the test - from now to the day your 6 months are up, that way you will be allocated a date just after your 6months.

If you don't state the dates you aren't available they'll just keep giving you dates and you'll have to keep cancelling and then they could get arsey and say that cos you cancelled twice you forfeit the fee or you could delay yourself more in getting a test date.

If they give you a date before the 6mths are up and you think sure what the heck it's only a couple of days before the 6mths are up and you go to the test, the tester will tell you that you cannot sit the test and you lose your test fee and have to apply all over again.

Naas is handy to get around, the routes are grand too so you'll fly it

it doesnt let you say what dates you're unavailable for.. I think it's after your first cancellation you can put that in.

You can email them the dates, just include your name address, driver number and test application ref number I think it is.

Ill do that if my first date comes too early.

Six months before you can get to do a test?WTF is that in aid of jesus you could learn to fly a plane/helicopter in about 4/5 weeks:rolleyes:,As someone who got there licence way back in the 90s in a space of 18 months (EB /EC )etc what's with the waiting time.

It gives you 6 months to learn the green cross code donkeyballs. It sounds easy but it's very tricky to memorise :pac:

On a serious note, It's to give the learner plenty of time to take lessons and be of test standard when taking the test. The RSA want to rid the system of people taking 2,3,4 driving tests. Also when the new EDT rules come in this 4th of April, it should be very interesting to see how it improves driving standards.

On a serious note its a joke. You shouldn't have to wait to do your full test, maybe 3 months max.

Meh, what can we do? We Irish complain as usual but in the end will still do nothing about it.

Whats this EDT thing Faith? is it something to do with a set amount of lessons to be taken before sitting your test.

Ah now Faith I'm getting on a bit to know about these rules for the young ones:p interesting reading all the same,And let's see if it brings down the amount of RTA that young males are involved in.
Now i might get flamed for this but I can see the likes of that large motoring school based in D1 rubbing there hands together thinking of the $$$$,And before people start to jump down my throat I had done lessons with them before going to another school.
