Golly bars are gone to golliwog heaven like that marmalade with the golliwogs on the jar( think was Robinsons), and the golliwogs in the Enid Blyton books:(

Our neighbours had a black Alsation called n*gger. This was around 81-82 and they always called him loudly without a second thought. :o

That was fairly common too, even dark skinned Irish people were typically given the nickname 'The N*gger' - ie 'The N*gger Murphy'.

Another un-pc memory - when I joined the army we were issued with an item of kit known as 'The House Wife'.. It was a simply uniform repair kit with spare buttons, needle & thread, wool and other bits and bobs.

Golly bars were discontinued and hb brought out vanilla ice cream tubs instead, these too seem to have now been discontinued.

My all time favourite had to be loop the loop that was until they messed with the green part and added cabbage to get the green colour so there was no artificial preservatives and all that crap. Yucky now !!!

Racist culinary marketing enthusiasts can take some comfort from the fact that there is a Cafe Sol van going around Dublin with "Sambos" plastered down the side of it. Never knew it was a slur until I asked a friends black girlfriend for one.

You're not from around Ballyfermot no?

No, but like Maki says, I've heard of other examples!

Aye, I remember a white guy with really dark skin being called darkie (in a friendly nickname sense) as a kid in Tallaght.

Yeah I knew two Irish guys at school called N*gger.
Also the eight ball in pool was always referred to as "Potting the N*gger.

We never thought it was racist or offensive though, we just never thought about it at all.

They were renamed to "Giant" bars for a while.
It got a bit confusing then as I think both Dale Farm and HB had "Giant" bars on the market...

According to Wiki they are still available, but I got for a Brunch these days instead :)

Brunches are lovely but they messed with the coating on that a few years ago too. Can't bate an aul' '99.

I remember my parents regularly buying golly bars for their collie x. We all loved that dog, I'm convinced that if they'd had him before us, we'd never have been born:)
