    Hi everyone,

I am getting this message on my macbook pro.. I am told it is known as kernel panic.. swapped to a new hard drive a few weeks ago so I put in my old hd to see if a fault had developed on my new hd.. Problem continued, so I am assuming I have a hardware issue.. Checked the ram by using one stick at a time, problem persists.. Im pretty sure it is the logic board & am told this is so expensive that I may throw my mb in the bin. Phoned a couple of repair places in Dublin.. Getting quotes of between €75 and €150 for diagnostics only which is arrogant nonsense.. If I have a problem with a regular pc or most other things, I go to the person I need to fix it, they take a look say heres your problem and give me a quote for a repair.. With Apple repair centres its like it's a secret and I got to pay them to tell me and then pay them to fix it!!

I am not happy with the idea that I have to pay someone to look at my mb and tell me its knackered! Anybody out there got the expertise to look at this for me? I am looking for someone to identify the problem and quote me for the repair..

    Thanks,

    J.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume it's the logic board. It could be any number of things. But the only way to figure out a problem like this is to try and narrow it down, so I'm going to ask a bunch of questions.

How old is the Macbook Pro? Have you tried running a hardware test using the install disc?

Also, how frequently is this happening? When you put back in the old hd, how long were you running it before it happened again? Was the old hd running a clean install? Has this problem only cropped up since you replaced the drive?

Have you verified the hard disk using Disk Utility? Does it report any errors? Have you experienced any performance related issues? Slowness, etc?

Do you have any third party devices connected?

Lots of questions will try answer them al but will start by explaining what happens:

The laptop starts up.. The timer begins, think it usually comes up just before the apple.. Then a grey curtain drops down the screen and message appears..I cannot get passed this..

Cannot run any disks, have also tried to run 2 3rd party diagnostics via usb but it will not read not read USB either.

MB is 3/4 years old.. it is a constant issue.. when i put in old hd the problem continued without any change.

Old hd is the original install since I bought the laptop.. It has been slowing down recently.. ran a benchmark which showed everything ran above 100% with the exception of the HD.. so my buddy fitted the new HD.. We took a mirror of the other drive.. Problem started 2 or 3 weeks after drive swap.. No 3rd party devices.

    Cannot disk utility..

So you can't boot off the install disc? Holding c with the disc in doesn't work?

Have you tried booting up in Safe Mode (hold shift) and running Disk Utility from there?

It doesn't sound good. If it is the logic board things will only get worse.

Is this a 2008 MacBook Pro? Pre-unibody? Those machines had a lot of logic board and graphics card issues, some of which Apple covered outside of warranty. I'm not sure if that repair program is still running though, but if it is an Apple technician would have to diagnose it.

Try starting up in single user mode and running sbin/fsck -f.

Bit strange it wont boot off install CD, is it for that machine?

I had kernal panics before on 2007 Macbook and they were caused by faulty ram. I got apple shop in states to check it out it was free, here i was quoted 100+ for estimate for repair and was told it most likely going to be a logic board fault.

muggyog Im pretty sure this will not work(on the basis that nothing else has). But could you be more specific about how I should do this?

@ ray, I have seen it mentioned about the place that ram can be an issue but my mb is an old model.. Were you using 2 sticks of ram and did both fail? I ruled this out on the basis that I tested each ram stick individually thinking that it was unlikely both would fail..

Do make sure that you test both slots - as well as both sticks.

I did not bring the macbook in brother did, when genius was checking he said the ram was faulty and was going to replace. But i had upgrade the ram in the shop (o2) when i bought it and they had not used apple ram so they would not replace ram, but did fix cracked keyboard ( done twice new york and belfast)
