Handbrake problem after free NCT check in garage

Hey everyone, just had a quick question. I took my car to Advance Pitstop to avail of their free pre NCT check. The bloke gave me a list of things that were going to have to be done and one of the things he mentioned was about the handbrake. Now, I've never had a problem with the handbrake before and when I got in the car to drive home, the handbrake was so slack. Hopefully I can describe this properly now heh Before, there was resistance as soon as I started pulling it upwards, but now, there's a few inches of slackness before the resistance starts. I just wonder if there's something he did (on purpose) so I'd have to get it fixed? I thought I'd ask on here before I ring them Monday. Or is this something that can happen suddenly? I just think it's a bit suss, me bringing the car (Peugeot 206) in to see what has to be done and this problem happes to appear?

    Thanks in advance :)

Sounds like the adjustment has been slackened off, not really something that would just happen all of a sudden.

Sometimes you have to slacken off the adjustment to remove the rear drums(brakes) but they should be adjusted back up afterwards.

What did they say actually needs to be done to the handbrake?

Thanks for the quick reply, he just said that the handbrake "was a bit loose on top", I didn't know what he was talking about and it was only when I started the car that I realised what he meant. I should have gone back into him then and there, am gonna ring them Monday and see what he says.

Dont do pre NCT, as others will tell you, there are a total waste of time.

Yeah I learnt that the hard way, but he's just created a new problem with the car that wasn't there before, a blatant problem, purely so I'd have to get it fixed. To say I'm ragin would be an understatement!

Just thinking, it wasn't even an NCT service I got, just a pre NCT assessment, so beware others who are thinking of doing them, if this company doesn't fix the handbrake, I will name and shame them I think.

This can also happen if one of the handbrake cables has been seized/tight. If the handbrake is pulled harshly as would happen on a brake roller test the cable can fail to return.
If it were the case you should have been given a better explanation on handover of the car.
