    Let's hope they don't crash.

I'm guessing it's in preparation for the big man.

They are doing a practice run....dublin-moneygall-dublin, and checking out their route on the way. There are 4 chinooks and 2 black hawks over. They will be flying along side 'Marine 1' with obama on monday

I counted three in sight at one time - I knew I'd find out what they were if I came on here :D, all I could capture on photo was a silhouette, but now I don't need to ask for help IDing it - not an aviation buff.

Yup. There were 3-5 of them. Circled right overhead thumping along. Just managed to find a camera, get out of my house and snap one in the distance... It's not a good picture by a longshot, but it's obvious what it is.

They flew over and circled twice before moving on. I think there might've been a pair of Blackhawks with them.

The girlfriend tells me that "three helicopter things with 2 rotors each, 2 ordinary ones and 1 more 2 rotor thing" are hovering over Lucan at the moment, so I assume that's them :)

I saw them too. Chinooks flew over about 15 minutes ago.

Although I did think the two Blackhawks were Augusta Westlands from the Air Corps.

They just flew over Mountmellick Co Laois - Brace of chinooks, followed by a pair of choppers and another chinook.

    Headed west.

Quite distinctive noise from the Chinooks, I remember it from old.

Heres a pic my mate took while they where flying over clondalkin. Over clondalkin it was three chinooks and I believe also two black hawks.

Just seen 3 chinooks and 2 helicopters fly over the house in Portarlington heading towards Portlaoise direction. The noise was unreal.

I take it they are for Obama. Are they US ones? The master of useless information isn't here to ask.

I live around the corner xD

On topic: I seen 3 Chinooks and 2 Blackhawks.
Circled my house about 4 times.
    Was getting worried.

The Americans are here alright. Two blackhawks and 3 chinooks passed over the city and landed near the papal cross phoenix park, got a great view of them dropping off some personnel before lifting off and heading west where they orbited the Irish army temp hq and then headed west probably for monegal

Yeah hes arriving here on Monday morning. He's going to make a rally speech in College Green as well, so I'd say there'll be huge security in town for that.

Just wait 'till the Shinners hear about this. They hate helicopters. Could be another protest in store. Leave the barriers there Garda.

:D at that photo in post #15- this was the best I could manage in a hurry. But if I can expect them again on Monday I'll be prepared.

Saw a C 17 (or something very like one) fly over my house at around lunch time. Thought I was seeing things.

Two Chinooks flew over Celbridge there around 17:08, heading roughly south (possibly ssw). I went googling to find out wtf, which brought me here. I wish I'd had my dslr handy (some great shots here), but they went by quite fast and fairly low. I heard them for much longer than I saw them. :pac:

Three of them just flew over Donaghmede/Coolock/Artane area

They just flew over me here in Loughlinstown, two Blackhawks followed by three Chinooks.

I had headphones in so didn't hear them until it was too late to get a shot. They headed out around Killiney Hill over the bay.

    Pretty impressive sight.

Just spotted them over Raheny, heading back to the airport. Cool. Haven't seen Chinooks like that since the 80s when I lived in Newry. They were used to transport jeeps and the like.

They flew over the coast here in Dalkey about 10-15 mins ago. Heard the rumbling, guessed it was them, decided it wasn't, then it got louder and louder - legged it up to attic and hung out the window and they were right in front of me. I'm right on the coast and they were SO close. Gutted- I was in such a frenzy I didn't think to bring the camera up. They were fantastic looking! Exciting times ladies and gents. :)

I see that the last photo I got looks a bit different at the tail - is this the Black Hawk then? Too long since I watched the film to remember.

Going by these photo's they are a very impressive looking machine. Might have to take a spin up around the airport later to try and do a bit of spotting.

OT but were would the soldiers that are here doing all the preparations be staying? Would they just be holed up in a local hotel or what, I'm presuming an Irish Army base is off limits??

They just flew passed me down from bray, directly over my house in Shankill, looked like they were heading to the airport. Ironically, my friend who I hadn't heard from in months, called me the second I was about to video the Chinooks on my mobile. She's off my Crimbo Card list lol Flew over at 18:13

2 Blackhawks and 3 Chinooks buzzin' around Lucan / Clondalkin just after 4pm today followed by a stream of Air Corps aircraft coming in, Learjet 45, EC 135, 3 No. Cessna's (Reims Rocket), 3 No. AW 139's, 3 No. Pilatus PC-9m's (all with pods on), a Garda Britten-Norman BN 2T-4S Defender 4000, and a Garda EC 135.

Sorry about the quality & distance of photos..

17:30 - Just saw the 3 Chinooks and 2 Blackhawk type aircraft go over Dublin bay, came from the south headed towards Dublin airport. Is there a carrier in the Irish sea?

It's a bit like waiting for the bus, you wait for ages to see one then 3 come along at once!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭Plug

How do the choppers get over to Ireland? Do they have a base in Europe or are they flown over from the states on big military cargo planes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,542 ✭✭✭Pataman

    Probably from the UK
