    Hi - stupid question

like to know do many people here that weight train have they own home gym OR do you go to the gym , like to know does it make much of a difference working out at home / in gym

    whats ur gym set-up

Plus and minus for both. I used to work out at home but find more motivation in the gym. When I see others working out it motivates me to try harder. On the other hand, having to queue for a bench or machine is incredibly frustrating. On balance I prefer a gym.

I have a home gym in the garage and workout from there.

    I have the following

Power Rack (with dip attachments and pull-up/chin-up bar
    240kg+ Oly weights
    2 Oly bars
    1 Oly Training bar (8kg)
    Oly Ezi Curl bar
    Oly Tricep bar
    2 Oly Dumbbell handles
    6 standard size dumbbell handles
60kg of standard weights (.5kg-5kg) for making dumbbells
    2 x 8kg, 10kg, 12kg, 16kg, 20kg & 24kg Kettlebells
    2 x 4kg, 6kg, 12kg, 16kg Clubbells
    Olympic Rings
    TRX Suspension Trainer
    Resistance Bands
    Skipping Rope
    6kg & 8kg Medicine ball

Hoping to receive a set of bumper plates in the not too distant future and my wish list is comprised of a Concept II rowing machine and a GHR bench.

I also live beside a park which is 1.3 miles in diameter so I can run or do sprints here.

So pretty much sorted. Before I bought all this I was in a gym for 4 years at a cost of €900/year. 2 years gym membership easily covered the cost of the above equipment. Now I never have to wait in line to use any equipment and can suit myself when I train :) So reckon it was money well spent.

I used to go to the gym. To be honest, I much prefer home. At the gym, you almost feel under pressure to keep the line moving. It's almost like learning to drive, you start panicing and making mistakes if you're holding up others. This atmosphere makes it hard to get started and to learn how to do exercises right.

If you really want to use machines, I'd recommend going to the gym but if you're just looking for free weights, buy your own since they are fairly cheap and you'll use them better at home

I train in a gym that offers specialist coaching in Olympic Weightlifting, so a home gym wouldn't cut it for me.

Workout in a Gym. It's got all the equipment and weights I would ever need. Membership only costs €240 a year, and work pays for that as a benefit in kind. Wouldn't be worth the expense for me to have a home gym... although I'd like one.

Do everything in a gym. Hoping to build some kind of prowler in the near future. That'll be for home use.

    Home for me : )
Bought a power rack + cable attachment, bench, 140kg oly weights (need more), EZcurl bar and normal DBs.
Garage is a bit cramped but you can do most stuff in the rack.

Only thing I missed about the gym would be the cable machine, it was great for flys, crossovers. After benching a bit more to make up and sticking with DB flys; I don't miss the cable at all, my chest has really started growing since I started at home.

I don't miss finding parking and the influx of newbies every September meaning I have to wait for machines also no more spending an hour driving to and from the gym.
I can be in and out to the garage in that time. the initial outlay would be around 7 or 8 hundred quid (about 2 years membership) but after that you have the gear for life and it holds it's value so it's more like money in the bank.

Judging by the poll so far, more people here train at home. Can anyone recommend where to buy good equipment for a reasonable price?

I really doubt more train at home.
Home-trainers are more likely to click on a thread like this. Then there is the likes of me would would like to train at home, and would if i had a set-up like Tommyknocker above (jealous :D)

I have almost the exact set up to TK, minus all the KBs (well i got a 16kg one) Clubbells, and only 1 set of standard Dumbbells. No TRX either but have got a concept 2 Rower and a Heavy FID bench. Use it 5-6 times a week so definitely money well spent like TK said!

I would happily swap my TRX for yoru CII :D:D:D:D

    P.S. I also have a heavy FID bench :)

No, I think the difference comes down to the person

I know that if I had all the equipment at home I just wouldnt use it! I'm lazy in that sense :P

And the gym always has someone bigger and better than you, so that keeps you motivated

Same with classes vs solo. I personally push way harder to keep goin with a class

I think for strength training a home gym is great because you only have yourself.
I've seen many a guy in gyms lifting more weight that they should because they're aware of the crowd. I just keep a book and try to make progress.
Although on the cardio side I think you're spot on, it's always better to have someone to drive you on.

Personally I prefer do my core strengthening work at home, have a good bit of gym equipment as it is so ive enough for all that i need.

And it means i dont have to que and wait while some fella is giving himself eyes in the mirror while doing the weights and licking himself like chocolate in between

It's as easy to not go to the gym, go to the bother of parking, queuing for stuff etc as it is not to go to the garage get your work done.
I've got kiddies and work late, factor in having to drive to the gym for a particular time (gym closes at 10pm), find parking, change etc
vs walk next door and lift weights.
I'd be perfect but some fcuker is always leaving the plates on the ground!:D

Same as me, i'm a lazy ****er so I just about make it out to the garage, found getting motivated to drive to the gym, wait for racks etc hard.

Plus spending the money to build a home gym is a good motivator to use it.

Don't forget the fact that you could possible sell the whole gym again for almost as much as you paid for it.
I got a rack and weights in the garage, but recently bought some resistance bands and I no longer miss the cable crossovers at the gym, the bands do a great job! So now I miss absolutely nothing about the gym.
Got home at 8 last night from work, didn't get to the garage until 9:30, spent an hour and a half doing the workout, most gyms close at 10, I'm very happy I managed to get in the workout! Would not have happened if I was still a gym member.

I mix it up, especially when we have good weather (which apparently is gonna be happening a lot more in June and July!). Most weekday mornings i'm in the gym doing deads, squats, dips, chins/pull ups, push ups, power cleans etc for strength and then when I really wanna go hell for leather in a short space of time, say 30 minutes I hit the local park with my mobile gym for sprints mixed in with sandbag lunges/squats/ground to over heads/carries and kettlebell swings all to get the heart rate up and just for some creative workouts to keep your training fresh. I wouldn't have it any other way TBH, this is why I love working out and don't get bored with it.

You can get a lot of stuff done with just sandbags and kettlebells, people sometimes don't realise this.

The only reason I hit the gym in the mornings is because it suits me as it's on my way to work and it's dirt cheap!!
