I heard that no Harry Potter societies exist at this moment in NUIM.
    Is it true?

There used to be one, but yep, you heard right, not any more. If you were really interested in having one, you could set one up in the college again.
Or if it was just for the sake of playing "quidditch" you could approach one of the other societies about it :)

Well.. currently I'm not planning anything but I am nearly sure that I will set up some kind of Harry Potter society
It's kind of weird but it's nearly 12 years since I got passionate about it.

Thankfully Dumbledore's Army Society doesn't exist any more

    I had to fix that.

I'm sure Omega might be up for a game of Quidditch,
I know they did "Street Countdown" once

Actually that was the award winning Dominicon which is the Games Soc's convention held every year in November, which everyone should come to.

Omega's convention is Epic-con which is in February and the con director was actually interested in running a match of muggle quidditch.

As far as I understand it is a good news, but..
Can you just explain me what Games Soc's convention is?

Well it's a weekend thing where we have various games events.

Last year's site is here: http://dominicon.info/index.html
We'll be updating it pretty soon.

Don't think there's a tennis club, but we've courts near the River apartments, and a few people play there so there might be interest enough to start a club?

There's no cycling club in the college at present, though I think there was once upon a time. The closest thing is the Galway Cycle, but that is not a recognised/ratified club/society in the college, rather a student group that fundraises for charity by means of a charity cycle to Galway and back, among other things.

I'd be interested in being involved in a cycling club if one was to be set up. I couldn't commit too much organisation wise as this year is the final year of my PhD but I'd do as much as I can. Even if a gang of us got together for the 1st semester until the Galway Cycle kicks in in January.

The only difficulty I'd forsee is that cycles would really have to be at the weekend as nights would be too dark in October onwards for evening cycles. Anyway, if anyone is interested in setting up a cycling club next year PM me and we'll keep in touch.

While the big push on training for the Galway Cycle starts in Jan/Feb (whenever the roads thaw enough that it's safe to get back out there the last few years!), there tend to be groups out soon after the AGM (usually in October) in recent years. Last year this went on till about the time of the university open days, when the snowfall and ensuing ice and cold weather meant it wasn't safe to bring a group out, at which point they were pretty much suspended until weather improved in January.

Great cause and all but the 50 quid is way too steep for me!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5 fionabyrne

yeah it is a bit steep alright but thankfully I'm doing it as part of a group so got a little bit of a discount, not much but at least it's something. Interested to know if there will be many at it.

The harbour and canal in Maynooth are great spots for a bit of fishing, strange there isn't a club. You can get drunk and tell tales of the giant pike that supposedly lives in that harbour, the grandfather or something I think it's called. Traveller kids used to always ask us had we caught it when we were kids fishing there :D

Yeah the canal is a very good spot, spent many good evenings down there last year myself.

If it was called the grandfather when you were young it must surely be the great-great-grandfather at this stage :P :pac:

If you are still doing it I may be well interested in joining the cycle group! Thinking of doing the galway cycle this year too...it's a possibility!

I'm definitely doing it this year. Done the training last year and got sick the week of the cycle and couldn't go. Wild horses and all that :D Training is great craic and I assume the cycle is judging by what everyone said after last year. All you need is a decent bike and you're sorted!

Didn't someone (possibly LeopoldBloom) want to start a Gentlemens' Club but couldn't because it was discriminatory? So they tried to set up a 'beard' club where you needed a beard to join?

I see someone here said that there's a tennis court in Maynooth.. Can anyone just play a round in it or is it specifically held back or something? :o

Not LeopoldBloom, if you are referring to the one last year that they tried to set up. It was the gentlemen's/Bro Soc. You needed to be a bro, or at least be a useful wingman/woman. Failed miserably.

There are two tennis courts over by the river apartments, and are hardly ever both in use, you can just wander over and play when you like :)
