    for the win

+1 on the Focus. The Astra is a joyless place to be for any period of time

If you can get a 1.8 tddi, double win. They swallow massive mileage and don't have any dual mass flywheels or dpf's to go wrong. Reasonably powerful, good to handle and light on diesel too.

The 1.8 TDDi was killed off with the MkI Focus. I'm sure you are referring to the 1.8 TDCi that replaced it. Downside of that engine is that power is delivered in one burst so you get nothing, then boost and then nothing again. 1.6 TDCi powered is delivered alot more linear and only the 110bhp version had a DPF. Majority of Irish Focus estates were bog standard LX/Style models with the 90bhp engine which didn't have a DPF. DMF is a problem on most modern day manual diesel engines.

yeah, it was the mk1 focus I was referring to. A pity it was discontinued because that engine was the best in them. I'm not a fan of the later 1.6 ones. While they aren't too bad, I've seen them give trouble that never afflicted the earlier ones.
Still, I'd sooner the focus over the astra.

Lower trim Focus's are pretty grim places inside.

For the that money your could head to the UK and get a 2.0 Titanium (€300 tax), which is the by far best engine and the best spec. No DPF either. I drive one and was recently in a Style and it felt very third world by comparison.

I had an '04 1.8 TDDI Focus Van.
Below 2000 rpm completely gutless and above that good power from 2000-4000, above that lost all power again, so usable power 2000-4000 rpm.
Now have '06 Focus CMax 1.8 TDCI, pulls from just over 1000 rpm all the way to the red line, very smooth and linear.
Kind of the other way round...
