    Hi all,
Thought I might get more responses here than in Terrestrial.
Just wondering if anyone is using such a device, not too many options out there by the looks of it so would like to hear feedback if any.
Would like something that does HD preferably.

According to 'Watty' on Digitalspy.co.uk for Saorview you should use ...

"If Apple Mac OSX, use Elgato USB DTT stick".

I think Watty posts here as well in the Cable & TV section.

Any of the Elgato DTT products will work:

I have both the Diversity and Hybrid and they both work perfectly.

I have the eyetv hybrid sitting at the back of my iMac, just using it for relaying the UPC signal to the mac.

What do I need for to pick up the saorview? will I have to attach the antenna? is it either saorview or cable or can it pick both up at the same time.

I really under utilize it, must look in to doing more with it !!! only realized this evening that the eyetv iPad app allows me to watch live tv !!!

You have to connect the supplied DTT Rod Antenna or a tv aerial in place of the UPC connection. Afterwards you will have to rescan to pick up the channels.

You can't have UPC and the DTT service through the same device at the same time as they both use the same antenna connection.

Would the Netstream DTT definitely work?

Provided you can receive a quality signal it should work without a problem. It's a bit too expensive for my liking though.

    Hi
I'm a complete novice here with regards to this. I never knew this could be done. Can I just ask one question. What stations can I get with this device? Could I get RTE or ITV. Just want to be able to watch football (Champions League) in peace without getting the silent treatment at home!!!
Does your location matter. I live in Cavan but not in the town.

At present Saorview only covers the channels from the Republic (RTE1, RTE2, TV3, 3e) and not Northern Ireland (BBC, ITV). Check the Saorview website for coverage. If you live near the border you should be able to pick up Freeview with an aerial which will give you the UK channels.

You'll get more info in the Terrestrial forum.

Just wanted to come on and give a big thanks to Third Eye and Talisman for the Elgato recommendation.
I got a Diversity from Ebay UK 2nd hand for £50 delivered.
Plugged it in and have to say it's amazing right out of the box, picked up all the radio & tv channels perfectly with the included mini antenna. EPG off the bat, pause and rewind of live tv, exporting recordings etc.
Sorry I didn't buy one a year ago!

£50 delivered, you did well. Thanks for posting the outcome. I'm looking at getting one too.

After the advice I received here I bought the diversity version. Brilliant piece of kit. So easy to use too.

Do you just get the Irish channels or the UK ones too with that?

Do you need to connect it to an external aeriel (on roof) or just a small one?

Just the irish channels but I knew that before i got it. I haven't got an external aerial but there is the option to do so, so I assume i would be able to get the UK channels here as I'm close to the border.

Slightly off topic, SaorView is shambolic. The price and the lack of channels.

If you are looking to buy them new then they are available direct from Elgato or the Apple store.

Unless I am mistaken you have to pay for the antenna and the box or a tv that has it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,850 ✭✭✭condra

Clutching at straws a bit there Conor.

You described SaorView as "shambolic" based on price and lack of channels, and now you're including the cost of a television or computer...

You can get a free television on adverts.ie or jumbletown, though in fairness, FREE is pretty expensive...

Maybe you should lobby RTE to start giving away televisions.

    Good luck with that.

You also have to pay for the aerial/antenna or did i misunderstand that?

It is shambolic they are doing what they have to (switch to digital and cut off analog) but they are doing it half assed imo.

Conor, if you are referring to the Elgato device, it includes two antennas.
They are small but give me 100% signal quality when positioned appropriately in my location. I am near to a TV transmitter but the signal has to pass through 300mm of concrete to reach my computer and it still works well.

Please take any saorview discussion to the terrestrial forum.

Others would disagree with you. For example my brother-in-law lives in the north west corner of Donegal and was never able to receive TV3 on analogue and the other Irish channels were grainy at best. He recently purchased a new fangled tv with one of them built-in digital tuners, hooked it up to his existing aerial and it works. Now he has been able to tell the Sky lot where to go.

Very interested in this thread - I have an elgato eyeTV DTT hybrid and, using the DTT rod antenna can't pick up any signal at all. Haven't tried pointing it around much as I assume the size etc of it mean the effect would be minimal?

I've upgraded to the latest software version and can't figure anything else to try. Can it be manually set up?

    Any guidance much appreciated.

You need to be reasonably near a transmitter to enable use of the mini antennas.
However I am near a transmitter but the signal has to go through about 3-500mm of concrete to reach my iMac. In order to get full signal I have to position my antennas accurately.

I go to Eye TV->Preferences->Signal and adjust the position of the antennas using the indicator. I have 100% on Signal Quality on both antennas and 66% / 55% on Signal Strength - just for reference.
The EyeTV was constantly crashing for me at one point and when I went investigating I found my signal strength / quality had drastically reduced and I needed to readjust my antennas to correct it.

I'm getting a max of 60% signal strength but it stays at 0% signal quality whichever way I point.

Perhaps am too far from broadcast? Though I think there's one not too far away in North Kerry.

You could be too far away or it could be down to details of your location within your house or it's construction. Just hook up an external antenna to it and you should be good to go.

Sorry for opening an old thread, but my question does not seem to need a new one, so not sure if doing the right or wrong thing... I digress..

Is it possible to buy one of these mac compatible USB saorview (and freeview for when I'm in UK) in a shop in Dublin - say argos or somewhere else?

    Thanks in advance
