Just throwing this up as a warning to anyone selling online not to be as naive as me. Had a phone up on Done Deal for sale and arranged to meet a guy to sell it last night around the corner from where I live.

Went up to the car buyer in the passenger seat. Talked for a second then showed the phone to him through the window. He asked a couple of questions about it and then bang driver put the foot to the floor and the car was gone with my phone.

Rang the cops and after 20mins of no show had a look on Done Deal and seen another guy selling similar so rang him. Same guys were on the way over to meet him. Drove 20mins over to him and they were just after ringing him to say they were up the road from the pub he was in. He told them to come down and meet in the pub car park but they ended up a no show. Obviously knew they wouldn't be able to pull the same in a car park.

Rang the cops down there and they had a look around but didn't spot the car. I had got the reg but it had turned up nothing. Obviously fake plates.

Sticking to Adverts from now on!

Wait a while and run another ad and then stab him when he turns up.

If they'd turned up in that car park there was the other guy and about 6 of his mates ready to jump on them. Problem with ****ers like that though is they'd probably have you stabbed first. Sold a phone to guy last week who'd been mugged for his. Even robbed his chewing gum!

Why are you blaming Done Deal for this?

We've learned a lesson today. Don't try to conduct business on the street through a car window.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,145 ✭✭✭✭My name is URL

Did you not find it suspicious that the guy who wanted to 'buy' the phone didn't even get out of the car? That'd set off alarm bells if it were me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

Doesn't the phone handset have a unique code which identifies it? Can this be locked down?

Selling on Adverts is awful - nobody wants to pay cash and all they do is constantly offer you swaps on shyte like old laptops , etc.
    Timewasters paradise

Agreed there. Has its fair share of scammers there too. Usually paypal, bank account scams and not sending. Was told theres a group of people that got done for 2k there by a guy selling and asking for money into bank account and not sending. Didnt get caught there as i'd never deal by post with a new user.

    eBay it is so!

It's all very well unless they ask to look at the knife through the car window and then drive off with it.

had to deal with some skangers in my time. Top tip, make sure if they meet you in a car, you park across the front of theirs with your motor. First it sends out the message that you may well be dodgier than they are, and second it stops them cutting and running. Cuts out a lot of messing and sets the tone from the off. OP, you should have run after the car anyway, terminator style. You would be amazed just how not far a car can get with traffic in a city-they are always very stunned when you put the pasenger window in on top of them-that also sets the tone for what follows.

Second if one refers to ones car as a "motor" that defo sets the scene. :D

Put an ad with his phone number on Done Deal selling an iPhone 4 for €300.. He'll well and truly regret it then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭mick121

if you call the phone company your registered with ie vodafone,02,they can block the phone and its useless.if you have the box look for the imei no.this locks the phone and its useless.sorry to hear about you getting ripped off op

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,004 ✭✭✭ActingDanClark

If u still have the box, supply the imei number to the guards, then they could pair it when used again on an Irish network. This depends on the cooperation of the networks tho, which can be slow, or non existent in some cases

Happened to a mate of mine. The scumbag ran off and sped off in a waiting car, my mate then tried to chase after them in his car and crashed!
