Apple TV2 & external hard drive?

    Have an ATV 1 which was modified & has a 600 GB hard drive in it & also a mac mini which has a terrabite external drive.

    It's handy to have streaming as I rip most stuff for iPad anyway.

    Is it possible to use an external drive with an ATV 2 ? (if it is I'll get rid of the ma mini as I can't stream to that & it's hooked up to the main TV

    Why would you lose the Mac mini? I have the same set up as you and stream all the live-long day from it to my iPad.

    I use Plex on the mini, to my knowledge, I can't stream from my iMac upstairs to Plex on the mini downstairs which means doubling up on content etc.

    Or is it possible to (which would mean I could just hook up the terrabite to the iMac & move all my content there)???

    Hated Plex. Never worked well and impossible (almost) to uninstall. I prefer (and use) eyeTV, Air Video, Zumocast and so on.

    But yes, you can simply hook up your drive to the iMac.

    Well, I certainly can -why doesn't Plex do this for you? If I remember correctly I use air video but I more usually stream to iPad from one of the machines as its much handier in bed.

    As far as I know, Plex doesn't do this, (it's some time since I checked).

    Will look into it later.

    As of Plex v9, it's split into two parts 1) a media server and 2) a playback client. So you could set up a iMac as the server and stream to the Plex client on the Mini, or any other device running a Plex client on your network(including iOS devices)

    To come back to this.

    I installed plex on my imac & added the itunes folders for TV & Movies & they were replicated automatically on the mac mini downstairs (the folders downstairs were also replicated automatically upstairs).

    My only problem no appears to be bandwidth. I'm using Devolo 200MBs AV Home plugs & while they're adequate for copying between the two machines, it appears they're far from capable for streaming :(
