Market crashes even after factory reset

I was having some problems with my HTC Desire S. It was freezing and crashing whenever I selected an application in Market. After lots of troubleshooting, I just gave up and did a factory reset. So, now the phone is compeletly vanilla. But even now, whenever I go into Market and tap on an application, it Force Closes the Market application. I just can't understand what I can do if a completely vanilla phone is crashing on a standard app. I even tried it using no SD card and no SIM card, in case that had something to do with it. I also reset the phone again and tried it with a different gmail account. Same thing.

Apart from returning the phone to Vodafone, I'm at a complete loss, as I believe Vodafone will be too.

    HTC Desire S
    Android 2.3.3
    Sense version 2.1
    Market 2.3.4

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks

You could try updating your Market, download the 3.1.5 apk and see if that works: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272152

Very good idea, and thanks for taking the time to answer. Unfortunately, when in the web browser and I click on a download link, it does nothing. I was considering downloading on a PC copying to the SD card, but unfortunately, there is no native file browser on the Desire S. I think this phone needs to go back to the retailer.

    Thanks anyway

My Desire S did that amongst other strange things.I think it started when I downloaded Skype.
The phone then completely died and the motherboard had to be replaced.(not uncommon apparently) .
    I'd send it back.
(btw I got back an unlocked unbranded phone)

Try go to market.android.com on your comp and see can you install astro file manager from there.

Good idea. But it just force closes the browser as soon as I tap on an application on the market.android.com website.

    Thanks

    Market from your PC though?

Are you rooted? You could get gapps on your PC and adb push them to the phone that way. Hmmmmm. Ill put me thinking cap on.

Is your email app working at all? You could email yourself the apk and try get it from the email app to install.

I know you already reinstalled the market but maybe the cache is still there. Manage applications > market > clear cache.

If I think of anything else I get back to ya

    Thanks Seany

Trying to install from the internet as you suggested. Great idea. It's been a while since I used the Market from the PC so I'd forgot this feature. Although at this stage, I'm starting to suspect the ROM is screwed. I hadn't rooted it, but I wonder if a factory reset and this install doesn't work, will Vodafone just have to restore back to stock ROM. I don't want to try it myself as its a company phone and I don't want to void the warranty.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. I'll let you know if this works.

Unfortunately, this is not going to work. It seems that Google has the wrong GMAIL account is associated with the phone.

For example: The phone = xxx@gmail.com.
But when I sign on to xxx@gmail.com on Market on PC, I get error that this account has no phone associated with it.

But, if I sign on as a new account I used previously on this phone: AAAAAA@gmail.com, Google thinks the phone is still associated with that email. It even let me "install" Astro and now shows it as Installed. But of course, it isn't. Maybe one more reset if called for!

Jaysus that's some hassle. You seem to be on the right track anyways at least.
